Violet Evergarden The Movie will be recieving a 4K UHD Blu-ray in Japan on 4 August, 2021 from Pony Canyon.

Dolby Vision HDR is included, in addition to a Dolby Atmos soundmix. Obviously no foreign language subtitles are included.

Previously the film had been advertised as the first digital native HDR feature, as previous titles, such as the works of Mr Shinkai, have been conversions from very high quality SDR masters (to mixed results in their HDR versions, both in the usage of high dynamic range and the upscale quality). Turns out that it was false advertising. The film was composited originally in SDR, and this is a Dolby Vision re-grade by Q-Tec, supervised by director Taichi Ishidate from the original 2K (2048x858p, approximately) digital master, as the website now shows in an interview. It's slightly better than the average anime feature, which is composited at 1920x1080p, so there's slightly more resolution to begin with. The difference in height is because this is the rare anime feature to be created with scope ratio in mind.

This marks the first true Dolby Vision re-grade of a digital anime feature. (Weathering With You does not count, as Shout Factory took the existing HDR10 re-grade by IMAGICA, and then made a fake Dolby Vision layer, and in the process, accidently encoded the film at incorrect brightness levels, washing out detail.) The total file size was 7 TB upon completion of the conversion.

Since Funi is obviously not releasing this as a 4K, I hope Anime Ltd does a UK release of this in a CE similar to what they did for the first movie.

I hope we'll get a UK version as well with english subtitles. I suppose I can import the german version, but I'll most likely have trouble keeping up with the story.

They released two different movies for VE in Japan so far, one in 2019 (The one released in the US and UK, Auto Memory doll) and one in 2020 (called simply "the movie") which is the one this thread is about.

This disc is an absolute feast for the eyes and ears. Such rich tones and textures and the Japanese TrueHD mix is one of the best I’ve heard in a while. I briefly tried the English 5.1 but didn’t waste much time on it. Sadly, I couldn’t get into the story or the melodramatic tone. I hope we get an animated movie someday with this visual style and fidelity that’s a bit more down to earth. But no doubt about it—this disc is stunning.
