Disney The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)

Quote:
Baby Yoda is headed to the big screen.

Jon Favreau is directing a new “Star Wars” movie called “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” It will go into production later this year.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said in a statement. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Jon Favreau is directing so it is something different.

Favreau and Filoni each directing their own movie definitely sounds like an "all hands on deck" moment for Lucasfilm

Interesting considering the Filoni movie is supposedly their “Mandoverse” capping event.

Grogu is heading to the big screen. The Mandalorian & Grogu, a new film to be directed by The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau, is a go at Lucasfilm. It is expected to film later this year.

Favreau, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, and Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni will produce the feature, which the studio said will be the first Star Wars feature to go into production since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. There had been some speculation that a film starring Daisy Ridley would be the first out of the gate, but it appears that project will take longer to hit hyperspace.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

The Mandalorian launched in November 2019 as the flagship show for Disney+, with the character then known as Baby Yoda, becoming a pop culture phenomenon. Pedro Pascal leads the series as Din Djarin, also known as The Mandalorian. Its third season bowed last year, and it has launched a number of spinoffs, including Ahsoka.

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” said Kennedy.

The development potentially marks a turning of hte page for Lucasfilm, which has struggled to articulate a vision for what Star Wars should be on the big screen, developing multiple properties that never make it over the finish line. But last year at Star Wars Celebration in London, it shared plans for three projects that seemed to be moving along, including Ridley’s. Others include a big screen movie to be directed by Filoni, and another set in the distant past from James Mangold.

The Mandalorian and Grogu up there with The Desolation of Smaug and The Crimes of Grindelwald as far as nerdy mushy mouthed titles that will make general audiences go

Dave Filoni’s movie will now be called Luke Skywalker Is In This One: A Star Wars Story

Meh.

The Baby Yoda story line seemed it was played out after S2. I’ll be curious if this “movie” will be basically two episodes worth of what might become S4 (like how Clone Wars was initially released as a movie). Along with that, will Mando actually be the lead or will it be Ahsoka? Bo-Katan? Someone else?

Folks will be disappointed if Ahsoka and Bo-Katan aren't in the movie at all.

Same goes for Luke Skywalker. He has to at least make a brief cameo appearance.

So the real question is, will this movie be stand-alone enough story wise so that people don't have to watch all 3 seasons of the TV Show in order to understand what's happening?

It’s funny, I feel like after season 1 of Mandolorian this thread would have been filled with people frothing at the mouth to praise this and to “show us how to make a Star Wars movie”. Oh how the Star Wars fandom works. We love you until we decide it’s time to despise you.
