Hi, y'all, since I received past week the German Blu-ray of this Losey classic, I was curious, and compared it to the 2-disc French release. To my great surprise, I noticed some differences: although being the same wonderful 4K-master, the French transfer has a very crappy encoding when it comes to compression. I just took a couple of caps to show you the issue (French caps are from DVDClassik):

So if you're just interested in PQ quality, definitely go for the German release (the UK one should be identical to the German, but I'm not sure at this point). The only thing you're gonna miss is the two extra supplements on disc two of the French release, that's all (which don't seem to feature cast or crew members anyway, seems nothing but a focus on the war).
Do the supplements on the second disc have English subtitles? I assumed they would not.
How bizarre that there are two different encodes, as the UK disc I own absolutely looks like it should be the first disc of the French set. The menus even use the artwork from the French release!

Yes, there are only two extras, but one is 69 minutes and the other is 207 minutes upscaled to HD, so the French edition would be well worth importing on the off chance they subtitled those extras.

Thanks for the check. At this point, it may very well be the caps from the site are not good... but since they're generally trustworthy, I guess it's better to have the two caps from someone who actually owns the French disc... but the BD info are indicative already.
Also, I don't know if the extras on disc two are Eng subtitled (the review doesn't help, it seems), but I guess they're not.

I own the French set. There are no subtitles (not even FR ones) on the second disk...

You’re welcome. You know, for us (french-speaking person) it is equally difficult to know if US/UK/… releases of major studios have FR subtitles or not. On many UK releases, the presence of subtitles other than the English ones for the movies are not even indicated of the box, for examples on the last seasons of Sons of Anarchy

I got this today for the bonus disc, which is a BD-25 with two lengthy extras, an interview with historian Laurent Joly and an episode of Les Dossiers de l'écran called "Pétain" (1976). This is the same episode with the debate the INA (Institut national de l'audiovisuel / National Audiovisual Institute) uploaded to YouTube (embedded below), but the INA upload is missing the first 86 (!) minutes, with the opening and introduction of a 75-minute documentary on Marshal Philippe Pétain. If you add the missing minutes to the episode length stated by the INA on their website listing (131 minutes) you get the running time on the bonus Blu-ray—207 minutes. Anyway, now I have this, I must find a way to have it subtitled in English.
The book is also very nice looking and seems to have a great deal of text, including a few short vintage pieces at the very end.
