I'm thinking this sold really well on BD for them to have a change of heart about releasing a 4K.
Just by looking at the "collections" stats on this site alone you can tell a lot of people picked it up.

Yep, I agree, I don't think they planned a UHD months down the road from the start.

True, but everyone who did buy the BD likely caused the UHD to be announced.

If everyone holds off on buying BDs from Universl in future, hoping for an eventual UHD, they may inadvertently ensure that there is no UHD, due to poor BD sales.
