Default Fortune: 9 Top Tech Flops - "Sony Blu-ray DVD player" is #4

Kinda shocked to see this listed.

http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/...fortune/4.html

Not sure why it's on the list, but it is.

maybe they just mean the player itself, not the format. they can't call the format a flop b/c it's thriving.

Yeah, not sure what the scoop is. It doesn't even really delve into what really flopped. The article if you want to call it that, seems pretty vauge.

They are only talking about the specific BD player, not the BD format itself.

Thats how I read it as well, looks like the s350/550 model from the picture. And how misinformed is CNN? First off they call it a Sony Blu-Ray DVD player (Fail) and second, that price has dropped dramatically in the last few months if its the s350, Circuit Sh!tty and WM have it for the 299.00 range. Amazon has it for less(250 range)

The title of the article is a bit misleading... the sub title clarifies a bit:

Quote:
Whether victims of excessive hype or consumer stinginess, these would-be sizzlers are likely to fizzle this holiday season.
It just means products that were hyped but probably won't sell as well as the hype would dictate. It's not a list of products that have already failed or are a failure necessary... just stuff that they think isn't going to sell as well as expected this holiday season.

Well if the $179.99 price point that Sears is going to have on the S350 BD player on BF is any indication, that unit is going to sell pretty good (if the other retailer have a similar BF special).

Yes, the continuing '06-07 myth that All of Blu-Ray Hardware was a "flop" because they thought we were supposed to buy the messed-up Sony S300 standalone and we didn't...

(What old top-ten hit next, the PS3 is a "flop" because we're not buying the games?)

2 week ago they had a news report about what people need if they decide to buy and HDTV...well with along telling people how good the resolution is on a HDTV they went into the HDMI cables which since they were in a local Best Buy store here in PA they mention the Monster cables then they went on to a blu-ray player which according to the reporter would run you over 500.00..now that was the icining on the cake.

The whole writeup is garbage. Calling the Android a flop when it JUST CAME OUT?? NO EARPHONE JACK! STONE THE DESIGNERS IMMEDIATELY! FLOP I SAY! FLOOOOP!

sorry

Twice he refers to Amazon sales rankings as if they are the only indication out there. SPORE SELLS BAD ON AMAZON! MACBOOK AIR IS #50something on AMAZON!

Nikon D90, JUST CAME OUT! ugh. Yet I keep reading.....

heres a tech flop for you.

how about MS paying big bucks for RPGs that sell like sh1t and don't move that many more consoles at a decreased price.

That list stinks.

No HD-DVD mentioned.

and Zune is on the list but I have heard that it's not doing incredibly bad.

Epic Fail.

(Yes: Desperately, snidely, and bitterly sarcastic against all clueless mainstream techie columnists who turn to Amazon figures when they don't know where else in the Cyber-verse to get facts, the way normal people do who actually use the products.)

Probably just an old HD-DVD supporter who is still pissed about it it being the loser. Blu-ray is the future of home entertainment, make no mistake about it.
