Fran Drescher to Play Timothée Chalamet’s Mom in A24’s ‘Marty Supreme’

“The Nanny” star and SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher has joined the cast of Josh Safdie’s table tennis movie “Marty Supreme.” She will play the mother of Timothée Chalamet’s character.

Starring alongside Chalamet and Drescher are Gwyneth Paltrow (in her first on-screen movie role since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame”) and Tyler, the Creator (in his film debut). Odessa A’zion also stars alongside magician Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller), investor and “Shark Tank” personality Kevin O’Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) and “Bad Lieutenant” filmmaker Abel Ferrara.

From A24, “Marty Supreme” follows Chalamet as a young ping pong pro. Plot details are scant, but the studio is touting the film as a “fictional work set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture.” Variety broke news of the project, which is currently in production, in July.

A24’s Timothée Chalamet Ping-Pong Movie ‘Marty Supreme’ Could Cost Between $70m - $90m

A24’s Timothée Chalamet movie Marty Supreme, about a 1950s ping-pong star, is one of the few blue-chip movies on offer at this week’s American Film Market in Las Vegas. It’s also shaping up to be the most expensive.

Word from buyers this past week has been that the movie — which is filming in New York — comes with an eyebrow raising $90M budget. We hear that’s exaggerated, however, and that $70M gross is more accurate.

That still makes the project the most expensive new package on sale at this year’s AFM and makes it A24’s joint most-expensive production to date alongside Dwayne Johnson starrer The Smashing Machine, which is in post-production (and is another ‘sports biopic’ that doesn’t obviously scream big-budget). Both movies are directed by a Safdie brother: Marty Supreme by Josh, and Smashing Machine by Benny. Both previously teamed on A24’s Uncut Gems and Good Time.

Timothée Chalamet Trained ‘For Months and Months’ To Play The Titular Ping Pong Champ in ‘Marty Supreme,’ Cinematographer Darius Khondji Says in Doha

Timothée Chalamet trained “for months and months” for his title role in Josh Safdie’s upcoming “Marty Supreme” about professional ping pong player Marty Reisman, reports Darius Khondji, the hotly anticipated film’s ace cinematographer. He added that he expects the A24 film’s Christmas 2025 release “to be box office dynamite.”

Khondji, who spoke to Variety on the sidelines of the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra workshop where he is a mentor, hasn’t yet seen “Marty Supreme,” which is now being edited in New York. But he underlined that “everything I hear is spectacular,” adding that “the shooting was so hard and crazy.”

Chalamet, who prepared for five years to play Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” also trained intensely for his role as Reisman – who started his career as a hustler in Manhattan and went on to win 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002 – “because you can do anything, any camera tricks you want, but you need to have a core,” Khondji said.

“He wanted to be like a real [professional] ping pong player when he started shooting,” Khondji continued, adding that Chalamet in the film is surrounded by “some of the greatest real ping pong champions playing today,” dressed like they would have been in the 1950s.

One passage reads: “When paparazzi photos of Chalamet kissing Gwyneth during a scene came out in the fall of 2024, they were a useful distraction from stories about Goop’s layoffs. While the work led her to fall back in love with acting, said someone familiar with her thinking, she also knew that the added visibility would only boost Goop’s sales.”
