Latest Blu-ray you bought or watched - Le Thread Ultime

Seems like every country and its affiliates have a topic like this one, so I thought: "Why shouldn't les Français have one as well?!".

This topic is bilateral:

- If you're French, what is your latest Blu-ray, regardless of its origin?

- If you're not French, what is your latest French Blu-ray import?

My latest acquisitions:

- Monstres & Cie (Monsters, Inc.) - 2-Disc Edition

Am in the US and just imported The Mesrine boxed set and Largo Winch from Amazon.fr .

Haven't had a chance to watch them though.

I wonder what you think of "deux jours à tuer". Dupontel is a fantastic actor and I am hesitating buying or renting this movie.

Only French film I have on Blu-ray is "La Mome" - which is an absolute essential one. I have "Fifth Element" on my wishlist and "Le Mépris" if someone ever bothers to make a Blu-ray edition of this masterpiece.

2 other recent great (and hilarious) French films are "le gout des autres" and "mensonges et trahisons". They may make it to Blu-ray but are good enough on DVD because the cinematography is not so important.

"Deux Jours A Tuer" is a very good film. I thought the ending was kind of a letdown and that entire plot lacked consistency, but I enjoyed it solely for the main actor's capability of making us feel uneasy in the mundanest of situations. I'd recommend you rent it first as you might not feel the need to see it again.

I was going to get The Fifth Element as the Gaumont Blu-ray looks gorgeous but since I already have the Remastered US Import, I might refrain from doing so. Unless you reckon it'd be a good idea?

I haven't seen either of the last two you mentioned but I've heard of them before. Let's hope they get a Blu-ray treatment someday ey, movies ALWAYS benefit from HD.

I am going to have to agree with Kynch. Deux Jours a Tuer was an inconsistent film. I would have to come down on the rental recommendation as well.

La Mome is fantastic, I have the boxed set on HD-DVD.

Le Mepris is fantastic and comes out on the 3rd of November in France. I have it in my amazon.fr basket ready to order!

The fact that Le Mepris is coming out on Blu-ray is the best piece of news!! Thanks!! (the dvd version is sooooooo crap)

Kynch, If you've haven't seen "le gout des autres", grab it instantly on dvd - it is the best "film bourgeois français" in a decade. Bacri is absolutely fantastic in this film.

"mensonges et trahisons" is really a very funny film that has great replay value and Clovis Cornillac and Edouard Baer make one of their best performances in this film.

That one actually surprised me. I tend to like Catherine Frot but didn't expect much from this film. I was afraid it would have the feel of a French TV movie. That was not the case however. To me it was really quite good, well written and acted with an interesting scenario.

For me there are many reasons I enjoy French films. Probably the number one reason is because I lived in France for 8 years and am fluent in French. I am a huge fan of French culture and the French way of life. Watching French movies has a certain element of nostalgia for me. I hope to return to live in France sometime in the future.

Beyond that, I think the French film industry is vibrant and creative. I enjoy the unique scenarios of some French films which to me seem to be less predictable and formulaic when compared to bigger hollywood productions. Often american films feel like a product of marketing research rather than an artful creation. Of course these are generalizations and there are certainly many exceptions.
