Default Need some receiver help

Hey Blu-ray experts -

I am new to the forums and was looking to get some receiver help. I own a PS3 and that is what I mainly use as my blu-ray player. I just upgraded my receiver to a Pioneer VSX-91TXH. So far the sound is excellent, but I think my settings are off or I am doing something.

I purchased with me new receive Casino Royale. I popped it in and began the movie, looks great. However, I noticed that the sound was not splitting up properly or maybe it is, I just don't know. I had always understood that your center channel was mainly where the voices came from and the front speakers was where the other audio (music, sound effects) came from. That is simplistic but anyway. When watching the movie, I noticed that the voices was coming out of my center as well as my front speakers. And not like faint voices, loud. So I figured I have it set on the wrong setting or input or something. I currently have it so it auto selects the best audio source, but again is it the best? When I change it to direct or pure direct, the sound seems to change and the different audio parts are coming out of the different speakers, which is what I thought.

Anyone who knows what I need to set my receiver on to make the audio come out correctly? I am not an audio genious. This is only my second receiver and the other was an old Sony hand-me down.

Thanks.

D

On the remote, the very bottom right button says S. Direct. Hit that until the receiver says Auto Surround. This will set it so that it will play whatever the source is sending to it without any additional processing.

Thanks for the reply. I have it set on the auto setting and I was getting the voices coming from both the center channel and the front speakers. Is that how the audio should be coming from my speakers for the best sound, or does it not matter in the end? I mean it sounds fantastic...the uncompressed sound is amazing. I just want to make sure I have it set right for the best possible sound.

Thanks.

out of curiosity, what PS3 sound settings do you have checked off?

settings - sound settings - audio output format - hdmi

(you should have everything checked off...dolby,dts,2.0pcm,5.1pcm,7.1pcm etc)

I am not at home, so I can't check, but I am pretty sure that I checked everything off when I updated to the new receiver. That will be my first order of business when I get home tonight.

crackinhedz are you thinking that I didn't check something off and that is why I this is happening?

well, I have heard of instances where the PS3 and Receiver connected just didnt cooperate with each other...so maybe if you did let the PS3 auto select it may have left something off? just a precaution because usally a problem is something simple that is overlooked.

I checked through my PS3 settings and I did have everything checked, so that is not it. The receiver does have a dialogue enhancer, but that was turned off, so that is not it.

If it auto selects that is when the center and front speakers seem to all produce the same sound, but I was clicking on the S.Direct button and went to Direct mode and it seemed to separate the sound. I am just curious why I it won't auto set the surround properly.

Thanks for all the help guys.

at work now, so cant help much...but I think your problem is the audio codec settings in your Receiver....there should be a list of each and they should be set on something like "use last valid" or something to that effect. (will get a better answer when I get home)

so it would look like:
Dolby - Last Valid
Dts - Last Valid
PCM - Last Valid
True HD - Last Valid

etc.

im thinking maybe one of these settings is off, so everytime you are trying to use that codec it may just be playing in stereo prologic or something?

(been a long day and only a confusing guess! will try to explain better when im home )

Well, I took matters into my own hands and ended up disconnecting everything, powering down the system and reconnecting everything again with a spare HDMI cable. And I have no idea what happened but it fixed the problem I was having. On the Auto Surround setting I am now getting the audio to properly separate to the different channels.

I want to thank you all for helping. And boy now that I hear it right...Uncompressed sound is the way to go. It even made a believer out of the wife. We just finished watching The first Pirates of the Caribbean movies and loved how much better it looked and sounded.

Thanks again for helping.
