Default Recommend "religious" horror films

Hi all.

At the moment I have a lot of time to spare since I can`t do nothing else than sit or lie in bed because of 3rd degree burns on my toes...

I watched The Rite last night and enjoyed it a lot. I have always liked horror movies that have a "religious" theme. The Exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Omen have always made my hairs stand out... Dunno why since I´m not that religious myself. So please recommend horror films like the ones mentioned above!

Thanks!

If you haven't seen it yet, and are looking for a religious horror/thriller movie that's pretty danged good, check out 'Frailty'. I think it's pretty awesome!

Rosemary's Baby, The Ninth Gate (more of a thriller than horror), The Order (another thriller, Heath Ledger FTW)

I second this. A truly great film.

Does Constantine count as a religious horror film? It deals with a lot of theological elements.

I'm not good with Horror films, but I think here are a few that I've seen that have a little bit of religion thrown in there:

The Mist
[REC] & [REC]2 (aparrantly the sequel gets a little religious)
Also Kevin Smith's Red State is looking pretty good, however I doubt it'll be as horrifically terrifying as Cop Out

The sequel does get religious .

I watched The Last Exorcism last year and that scared me lol. Would recommend.

Exorcism of Emily Rose - has some courtroom drama in it but is a solid flick and creepy too.

The original Exorcist.

The Omen(the remake is actually fairly decent but the original is solid too).

First choice is Frailty as mentioned...

Would also suggest:
Lord of Illusions
Prince of Darkness
The Ninth Gate
The Prophecy
House of the Devil
Stigmata

Fallen is also an amazing movie with religious tones but is more of a thriller.

"The Exorcist," the first three "Omen" movies (and the remake if you're not picky), and "Rosemary's Baby" are all must-sees. I don't consider "The Mist" a theological horror film, but religion is a major part of its theme, and it is also a must-see in my book.

I'm really fond of "Constantine" for some reason too. "End of Days" is pretty darn cheesy, but fun. "Frailty" strikes me as a serial killer movie, but religion does play into it, and it is a good film.

In addition to what's already been mentioned, there's "Legion," which is okay at best. "Carrie," "Children of the Corn," "Silent Hill," and the original "Wicker Man" have a slight religious angle, with fanatics or cultists as the antagonists. "Martyrs" gets into it a little bit as the characters explore the mysteries of death.

Some devil and Hell-themed movies include "Devilman," "Drag Me To Hell," "Event Horizon" (which is also something very spacey), "Ghost Ship," and "Hellraiser." I also seem to remember renting some movie about Satanists terrorizing people, but I don't recall the name of it.

That's all I can think of.

i would recommend Exorcist 3 : The Legion and while not a horror movie, i highly recommend The Ninth Configuration. both movies are directed by William Peter Blatty, the writer of the original Exorcist, and both have a lot of religious undertones about death, life, heaven, hell, and the whole does god exist.

note - The Ninth Configuration is a thinking mans movie, but i can guarantee that you will be quoting lines from it from now on if you watch it

While it's not necessarily a "horror" film per say I'd still recommend Night of the Hunter.

Bram Stoker's Dracula has many religious elements.

Dracula himself was created out of a religious ceremony in which he cursed God for ________. <-- spoiler

Prince of Darkness was the last film to truly terrify me. Of couse it doesn't hold up today for me the way it did in 1988.

The Devil's Advocate.

Sure, you'll have to suffer through Keanu Reeves' abysmal southern accent, but Al Pacino's performance is something else (bonus points for nude Charlize Theron, and Connie Nielson).
