Default HDMI cable made it worse!!!

So i finally got an HDMI cable, after being screamed at on this website from people saying "You arent using an hdmi cable!! your stupid!" Well I am new to this whole bluray thing. I have a 26 inch lcd hdtv, and a sony bluray player. I got the hdmi cables from amazon.com, they were about $8 and i hooked it up. I know i hooked it up in the right spot, because there is only 2 areas where you can plug it in correctly. Anyway, i poped in a movie, and noticed no change in the PQ/SQ. When I play regular dvds, the picture looks worse.....

So basically I wasted my money

The best way to see a bluray is with a hdmi cable. However your tv is so small that your eye cant really see the difference. “up converting” a regular dvd is often not an improvement. On the positive side, some bluray movies in the future may have a copy protection that will only allow full resolution when using a hdmi cable. If and when that happens you are ready.

Have you checked your Blu-ray player menu for DVD upscaling options? Some Blu-ray players will set upscale different for component or HDMI. Make sure that the upscaling is turned on for HDMI.

Just to piggyback on the above post . . . have you gone through the display settings on the PS3 and set it up to output in HD? If you were just using the composite cables, just plugging in an HDMI cable won't make any difference. You have to set it up properly.

Since OP has not mentioned what viewing distance he is at, any comment on screen size is a waste.

*PLUS* if this is the HDTV the OP has:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/produ....do?oid=194702

... it is only 720p.
BDs will look good, but won't be displaying at 1080 no matter what settings are used.

26'? So... its a 720p TV then. Im not even sure if 1080p 26 inchers exist. Probably not...

You need a new TV if you really want to see a HUGE defference from BD to DVD.
Im not rushing you. Im just saying... You might wanna start putting 5 bucks a week into a new TV and eventually get a new TV. Maybe a 1080p Bravia?

Point is - 26' is pretty small...

As for the SQ. The sound isnt gonna change if your playing it through the speakers of your TV.
You need a new receiver. I suggest the Onkyo 605. It does all the HD audio, and is one of the cheapest. You can pick them up for a near 399.

EDIT: Are you sure your BD Player is set to output to 720p? Who knows... It could be displaying in 480i... Not sure how BD players even work. PS3 > all.

I don't think its the HDMI cable that is the issue as I've never seen an 'improvement' with a movie player that 'upconverts' a DVD, if anything depending on the movie, it exploits its flaws even more.

...you have to calibrate for the HDMI input.

What looked good using another input will not be set for the HDMI input.

yippie skippy...go to the bd player setting and select HDMI as your output...again though like many have said you will not see much difference on the 26" screen.

actually NO, becuz if you changed from one type of cable to the other, the TV would be blank, however, he could see the video, which means he did set up correctly. and that's the good thing about HDMI, cuz everything is auto set by the standard. if he had a PS3, turn it off, and then press and hold the power on button until the PS3 and HDMI cable auto configure the settings.

and like someone said, the screen is way too small to see a big difference. I mean no disrespect, but TVs are under 34inch should be banned from using HDMI since it DOES NOT make a big impact!!!

Misconception.
If the display is 1080p, and the viewing distance is ~3 feet, then it is almost ideal.

Since the OP has a 26" 720p HDTV... it really doesn't matter, does it?

oh wait, i meant to say TVs are under 40inch!

and whatever it is, if he bought a 40 or 46 Bravia XBR5, then all things would be GOOD!

Well, yeah!

If the OP's TV was 1920x1080p, and was ~3 feet away... he would be ok.
For a living room, the XBR would be better.

Actually, YES . . . if the PS3 is only set to output @ 480p, then obviously it's not setup properly. The PS3 wouldn't output nothing just by changing to HDMI.
