Default PS3 & HDMI Cable & OPtical Audio Questions

It is my understanding that the PS3 does not come with a HDMI cable. I already have a fairly decent HDMI cable that I use to connect my DirectvHD to my TV. Can I use this HDMI cable or do need to buy a specail HDMI cable that only works for the PS3.

Any cable will work, and it does not come with an hdmi cable. Like kp said, any hdmi cable will work.

Yep, but one thing I hate is that you can only output sound through the tv or the surround. Not both

Correct! If you want the tv speakers to play, you have to go into sound settings, and change it to hdmi output. I change my settings late at night so I won't wake everyone.

Monster has a guide on its site to indicate band with and specs regarding proper hdmi performance.

For example

Game console: PS3 (it gives you the option to pick between xbox)

1080p 6.68 data transfer rate

12 Bit color
60 hz
Dolby Digital/ DTS

they recommend a advance cable..
Plus you can scroll on all the other devices and see their recommendations per each equipment you need.

My system:

Sony HDTV 50 inch
PS3 60 gig
Onkyo 705
Monster 1000 Ultra high speed for preamp to tv

Boston 5.1 surround (soon to be 7.1)

Monster Hmk 3600 stage 3

Monster advance high speed for ps3

(soon to add Direct TV HD)
Satellite hdmi will be the standard Monster cable

I am a potential PS3 owner and have heard something that concerns me. This thread seems to be answering the topic. I want to as my question to be sure that I understand how the PS3 works.

I would like to run the PS3 to my TV via HDMI and audio to my 5.1 receiver with optical. From what I have heard, game's audio would be 5.1 DTS or Dobly Digital, but Blu-Ray would only be 2.0. This my question. Can I get all audio (games, DVD and Blu-Ray) to be 5.1 hooking up this way? If not, can I run all HDMI to the TV and then the optical out from the TV to the receiver and 100% 5.1 with no loss. Thanks.

This is the same as my current hook-up and I get full surround for all media types. Make sure you have all the surround types checked in your PS3's sound settings. As for the second part of your question, no that does not work...at least not on my set as I've tried this as well.

Ditto.

My toddlers don't really need the surround sound experience while watching their kiddie movies. It's just too much hassle to go through the menu and switch the settings back 'n forth.
