Default Which player to get?

I am in the market for a Blu-ray Player. I recently purchased a Sony KDS-R60XBR2 and I want to get the most out of it. I want something that upconverts Standard DVD's and uses a HDMI connection. I also want something that is updateable with new codecs, etc. Should I wait till 2nd generation comes out? I just want a great player.....

They are really questions only you can answer.
Maybe answer these questions
Can I wait until the 2nd Gen players come out?
Will the sedcond Gen have what I want or will I have to wait until the 3rd Gen?
Can I afford to upgrade within 12 months or so?
Is the enjoument I will get out of a player now worth the change over cost?

Can I wait until the 2nd Gen players come out? I could but rather not wait...
Will the sedcond Gen have what I want or will I have to wait until the 3rd Gen? Could not wait for third generation!!
Can I afford to upgrade within 12 months or so?yes, but would rather buy the best now to put off upgrading as long as possible...
Is the enjoyment I will get out of a player now worth the change over cost?
I enjoy high def so the cost is worth the enjoyment.

I had the same dilemma. So I went for 600$ Sammy, actually it was less than that, Refurb. 560$ to be precise. Once several second gens are out I'll upgrade and I can ditch Sammy for some money anyway.

How much do you have right now?

Most people right now would go for the PS3 option. For either 500 or 600 in American dollars, you can already get a Blu-ray player that can be updated frequently through firmware system updates, a game console that can ask a computer (although I don't know how it works) and that it already has a CD player, SACD player and DVD player in one.

Unfortunately, DVD upconversion IS NOT AVAILABLE. However, there will be a firmware upgrade to be released sometime next year (possibly during the Europe/Asia-Pacific launch coming in March 2007).

So, if you ask me (personal opinion), the PS3 is the BEST route you can take. Then once Blu-ray players reach below the PS3 price tag in two-three years, then you can either make your move.

But for some individuals, they'll just keep their PS3

And do you know the reason why some people would do that? Simple....the PS3 exceeds their expectations.

Default Get the Sony BDP-S1

I've got the Sony BDP-S1, and HD TiVo connected to the Sony KDL-46XBR3 LCD TV and RHT-G1000 5.1 theater stand system, and have to say I'm completely blown away -- completely! My Blu-ray disc collection is growing, but isn't even close to what I have on DVD right now... so I've been watching a lot of DVDs. And the up-sampling feature alone, makes this Blu-ray player stand out. I watched my standard-def wide-screen version of Aliens last night and was amazed at how much BETTER it looked on my new system vs. my old 4:3 SD system. That's thanks to the Sony BDP-S1 up-converting the signal to 1080i.

Sure, something better (and cheaper) will always be right around the corner, but I want to enjoy myself NOW, which is why I made the investment. I'm having a blast.

Yup.

This would indeed my first and only Blu-ray device. Period.

Until they start making sub-USD$200 players in the near future.
