Default 120 hz

I'm going to be getting a new flat screen around the summer time and was looking into getting a 52'' samsung. I found a samsung 52'' without the 120 hz capability for $2,500. I also however found a samsung 52'' WITH the 120 hz capability for $3,500. So my question is that is the 120hz feature on hdtv's really worth it? or is there really no difference?

here are several links to threads related to 120 hz, etc. Forums like this will not search less than 4 letter search terms. You should try searching google like "site:blu-ray.com 'search terms'" if you have trouble finding stuff in the future.

i 've said this in other threads about the same topic, but i'll say it again. 120hz is awful, awful, awful. The first time i saw a tv broadcast processed at 120hz i thought the tv was defective. it's great if you love the look of home videos shot on a digital handycam

it's a matter of taste. While you get super sharp pictures and super smooth movement, it kinda cheapens the movie... in fact, it makes the movie not look like a movie. It makes the locations look like movie sets, etc. Some people like it... some people don't. The good thing about the Sammy (I assume you're looking at LN-T5271F) is that you have the option to turn the motion enhance off, or low, medium or high. I keep mine at medium. There are movies, however, like 300, which doesn't lose it's "movie-ness" even at 120hz set to high because the movie is grainy. Go to a store that has the TV on demo and ask them to turn 120hz with motion enhance on high. See if you like it. Let me tell you that it freaks people out. If it freaks you out, buy the cheaper TV. Then again, you can always buy the 120hz TV and keep it set to low or off... it's good to know that 120hz is waiting there if you feel the need to watch movies that way.

I think this feature can definitely be useful to particular people, BUT I think that it is definitely essential to get a TV that is able bypass its standard frame rate and push through 24fps when playing a film

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I think a lot of people are confusing 120hz and motion enhancement algorithms, such as Sony's Motionflow. 120hz by itself doesn't make things looks smooth like digital camcorders.

1000 more for a 120hz, no, its not worth that much more, I didnt like it at first, in fact, it took me 3 days to adjust to it, now I love it, when people come over, they say the same thing I did when I first saw it, they don't like it. I just ignore it cause I was like that also, until a few days went by. When playing ps3 games and watching standard channels, I really cant see any difference, but when watching a blu-ray movie, or movies on demand, you can tell the 120hz is on. Like I said for me the problem was when I first saw it the first day, I didn't like it, now Im adjusted to it, I don't turn it off. I'm happy with it, but I picked an xbr5 up for 2000 so I really didn't pay too much more for it.

I'd have to agree here. at first I hated it, in fact, while watching HD TV it kinda made me sick to my stomach, literally. it took me a while to adjust. I don't use it for HD TV any more (except for sports). I love the look of it with Blu tho.

I was in the same situation just about 1 month ago. It was a 52" samsung 5265 without 120hz for $2000 or pay $1000 more for the Samsung 5271 ($3000). I could not justify the spending 50% more money on a tv for minimal features. Don't get me wrong, the 120hz is nice but I just feel that with the way technology is changing in TVs I would rather have that money back in my pocket for my for a future purchase. (Don't go cheap, but there is no need to go overboard).

I looked at it this way. I bought a 720p 32" samsung for $1600 bucks two years ago. I have since replaced that "amazing tv" IN 2.5 YEARS with newer technology because 1080p became more affordable. 2160p or OLED will become available to the consumer in the near future and you will be out another $1000 bucks.

120 Hz does not equal "wierd 3D motion look."

The wierd 3D motion look comes from a special feature on the TV that you can turn on or off, like Sony's "Motionflow."

The main advantage of 120 Hz on a HDTV is that it can more accurately play back 24fps Blu-rays since you can evenly divide 120 by 24 (120/24=5), versus a 60 Hz TV where you can't (60/24=2.5) and it has to "fudge" the difference.
