Default is it real dts if going to 2 ch hi-fi?

At the moment ive been connecting my ps3 to my hi-fi using the left and right phono cables on the composite you get with it and the hdmi for picture. If i do this even if its just coming from 2 ch and not surround no rears or centre is it still real dts sound or am i just getting 2ch standard hi-fi stereo.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it...

No, you are not getting DTS surround.

If you are not using an optical cable, S/PDIF, or a HDMI cable, I would say it is just a stereo soundtrack.

Ok so how would you explain that when i change the audio signal using the audio button on the ps3 remote from dolby digtal, dts and then to pcm it improves a whole lot from each one.I would of thought if it was just normal stereo sound i was getting it wouldnt make any difference which track on the disc i was listening to.Do you think its still normal stereo sound but it just sounds better because of the higher bit rate?

i think you need to explain exactly what your using and how your ps3 settings are for people to understand. are you still trying 2 channel pcm from optical?

Do not know what you mean by "hi-fi stereo" but if you have not changed your audio setting you would be getting 2 channel LPCM. This is the default output for the PS3, there can be a variation in sampling rate but depending on your gear the difference would be subtle.

the picture is hdmi to hdmi tv but im just asking about the sound im using the cable that comes with the ps3 i think its a composite cable and has 2 phono left and right audio connectors im plugging that into the back of the ps3 and then plugging the left and right phono audio connectors into my hi-fi and then choosing AV or something on the audio ps3 settings.I want to know am i getting the dts 1.5 full signal quality in my 2 speakers or am i just getting hi-fi stereo.I understand it cant be surround as theres only 2 ch also as i said before as i go from dolby digital, dts then pcm it sound a whole lot better each time.Hope that is a better explaination.

I always thought red and white composite was stereo sound. I might be wrong on that?

your not wrong, most of the time it is. i think that you can still get pro logic out of composite. like the old console games like the n64. all they had was composite but games had prologic surround. i dont understand what hes trying to acomplish. just use whatever sounds good to you.

using composite i dont think its "real" dts.

I know you can get Dolby Prologic out of a stereo source, I don't think you can get partial DTS though....

You are getting the audio, but it is downmixed to 2 channel.

Either way you are not doing your blu-ray HD experience any justice.

Please get proper system and connection to truly appreciate the wonder of HD.

In fact, you're not even appreciating SD DVD with this setup.

Dolby Digital was created and founded from the concept of a 2 channel soundmix.

DTS was created and founded on the principle of multi-channel (5 or more) soundmixes for movie theatres. DTS by its very nature is 5.1 at its core design. So, through stereo composite jacks the signal is downmixed to 2 channels. Therefore, the answer is NO. You are not getting the full 1.5Mbps signal detail. The full signal strength is reserved for a minimum 5 channel output and I would imagine that stereo cables can't handle the transfer rate of that much information.

Dolby Digital and DTS Digital are lossy formats. When you use two RCA cables instead of optical or digital S/PDIF, you are getting a down-mixed version of the sound recorded on the disc in two channels. This may sound different than a stereo track saved in PCM format on a disc. Of course, it all depends on how sensitive your ears are. Exposure to loud music can affect your hearing in the long run. I like when my friends come over and tell me how much better my two speakers sound then their "killer" surround sound.

The owners manual states that the default output for audio is 2 channel LPCM. How many speakers you have connected has no bearing. The only thing that matters is how the sound on the disc is encoded( DD, DTS or whatever). Btw i have heard some high end setups play movie soundtracks and they blow away a cheap multichannel setup.
