I have a buddy who wants to upgrade to the 605 from the 604 so he can get dts-hd.
He wants to sell me his 604 for $200. Should I hold out for the 605 myself, or take him up on the 604? Am I going to notice a big diff between PCM and DTS HD to hold out? I have a smaller living room with average Yamaha cube speakers for my surround sound. |

If you are going to upgrade, you should hold out to be able to decode the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. It is very much worth it. No experience with Onkyo so I don't know about the quality, but personally I would go Denon or Yamaha... They would cost ya more, but worth every penny in my mind.

(1) the 604 easily handles 5.1 PCM decoded by the PS3, (2) since the PS3 internally decodes TrueHD into PCM and sends to the 604, the 604 effectively plays the 5.1 TrueHD too (as 5.1PCM) (3) for DTS-MA, that's a problem, but Sony should be announcing a new software upgrade so the PS3 can internally decode DTS-MA to PCM, so the 604 can play 5.1 DTS-MA (as 5.1 PCM) (4) I don't believe the 605 can decode 5.1 DTS-MA, only the Onyko 805 can, so don't believe the 605 has an edge there (5) realize that the 604/605 cannot play 7.1 PCM, and the 805 can, so that is another reason (in addition to being able to decode DTS-MA), to invest in the 805...but buying the 604 for $200 is a good deal IMO |

The 605 can decode DTS-MA if you have a player that can bitstream it. the 605 can play 7.1 PCM tracks. But if money is no object, buy the 605 for yourself, and sell me his 604 for $200 ![]() |

Well, like we all have been told, the ps3 will probably never be able to bitstream the dts-ma, so until I get a BD player that does, that function of my 605 will never be used.
Kinda sucks, I had a 604 for two weeks and sold it to get the 605 cause it was on sale, but I really wouldn't have needed to, I could have kept the rest of the money cause I think the 604 and 5.1 would have been good enough. |

I think it was Wikipedia originally, I can't remember where I found it another place though (can't always trust wikipedia). I didn't ever hear that it wouldn't be able to do DTS-MA though... I am gonna look into it all again here. I may have to go to a stand-alone soon if it's true

Do you need HDMI 1.3 to get DolbyTrueHD and DTSHD out of the PS3?

no, HDMI 1.1 or higher.
The PS3 decodes the TrueHD internally, converting it into Linear PCM. (the PS3 does not decode Dts-HD Master yet, but hopefully soon?) You need HDMI v1.3 to bitstream...the PS3 does not bitsream, it internally decodes and sends as Linear PCM, which is essentially the same thing when its all said and done. |
