I always watch the alternate version first because it may be better and different. Ex: Bad Santa has two versions, the directors cut and the unrated. After watching the unrated version first the original version lacks scenes not shown in theaters. It's a neat feature to have when there's extra room on the disc.

the alternate ending is 'happier', but just doesn't fit.

Do not, if you value your first time, watch the alternate version first. Watch the theatrical first, it's got an ending that makes more sense, but is admittedly less happy. Then go to the alternate and just fast forward to the only part that's different.

Both of them have their good points and their bad points.

I prefer most of the alternate ending, but I wish they could have meshed it somehow with the theatrical ending in regard to Will Smith's character. Since the alternate cut makes more sense otherwise with earlier plot points.

I saw the original. Thus, I will watch the alternate ending version on the BD first.

I want to find out just how "controversial" this ending really is.

I didn't think the new ending was "controversial" at all.

Happier? Yes.

Do I like it? I don't know. It was the kind of ending I expected when I saw the movie in theaters. The ending of the theatrical cut surprised me. [SPOILER]I didn't think Neville was going to die at the end because I'm so used to the hero of a movie surviving.

I Am Legend was a blind buy for me, I pre-ordered it, got it in today, and just finished watching it. I watched the theatrical version first, and then I watched the ending of the alternate. To be honest, I didn't like the alternate at all, it just didn't fit the rest of the movie. Yeah it was a happier ending, but the movie isn't a happy movie, so yeah.

If you think about it, the theatrical doesn't fit the movie at all. It makes no sense.

Funny, I was just discussing this with my brother last night while we were watching this movie. I too am one that loved the alternate ending as it to me made a ton more sense and it gave the movie a better suited ending, not only from a happier perspective but also from a scientific stand point. When I saw the theatrical ending in the theatres, I was so turned off by the movie that I never wanted to see it again cause it made absolutely no sense. I won't go into it cause I know it just causes tension

Power to the director for making the alternate version, although whatever made him use the theatrical in the theatres only god knows but still, he gets credit for including the alternate ending

I prefer the Alternate ending after seeing the theatrical version in theaters. They both have good points, but I think the Alternate version makes more sense. *SPOILER*: The Alternate ending fits in much more with the previous events in the movie he encounters with the head smart "dark creature" and his butterfly woman. Neville says they have no human emotions or personality left and he gets proven wrong...and the alternate ending with the smart dark creature proves this further with his desire/love for the girl.

How did the ending included on the film not make sense -

SPOILER

he sacrified himself to give the cure to humanity so he would in fact be "Legend" or at least that's what I took away from the film.

The alernate version was "different" to say the least I wouldn't say better though.

My wife and I felt the same way, that a fair blend between the two would have been better:

SPOILER...................................The head creature setting up a trap to capture Neville showed intelligence, and revenge - both human traits. It was alluded to with the main monster nearly coming out in the sun to get his girlfriend, that there was remnants of love below the surface caused by the rage virus. When the creatures get to the house they obviously want to kill neville, and when the head monster sees his girl in the umbrella corp lab there's nothing--no recognition, no desire to get her, just blind rage. Smith ending his life made sense from this standpoint, and the woman and boy was a happy ending - just not for neville.

The alternate ending had too much 'cheese' with the creatures 'snuggling' too much. To go from great lengths to kill neville by jumping into the side of his truck and turning it over from the force (yeah...right) to kill neville and then into 'aww, monster just want's his sweetie' mode....it was too much, and too forced.

The only way the 'blend' could have really worked, would have been if only the head monster made it down to the lab and they both let each other go.

Personally, I'm looking forward to 20 or 30 years from now when someone remakes the film yet again, but hopefully this time sticking VERY close to the original story.

~Camper
(references to the rage virus from 28 days later, and the umbrella corp from Resident Evil franchise is intentional)

Without putting in my two cents about which ending was more appropriate, I would say to watch the theatrical ending first as that was how it was released publicly in heaters and was decided to be the more suitable ending. That was how the director/film company intended you to watch it and that should be respected. Afterwards you should then watch deleted and extended scenes.

I must say I don't agree with Blu-ray Fanatic. He says it might be better and different but if you haven't seen it at all, it definitely can't be better or different. To each their own though. Everybody can and does have a different opinion and that's a great thing. My answer is different from his but no more right or wrong (although I think my answer is better )
