Another good bang-for-the-buck 5.1 sustem is the Boston Acoustiss MCS 100 available on Amazon.com for about $350. It has a sicnal-sensing subwoofer complete with cable.
My daughter has this system and is very pleased with it. You would get a good deal of mileage here before you need to upgrade!

I have a Samsung ht-x50. it's one of those all in one upconvert DVD players/receiver, but the sound is amazing for something that only cost $250! Subwoofer kicks hard. it has an optical input, and HDMI out. I highly recommend it for the budget minded consumer.

I think you should save up more money to get a better surround sound system then the ones you can get for $300...

Stick with this because you'll need hdmi audio (trust me). If not, see if you can find one of those old Panasonic home theater in a box (one that has DVD-Audio capability) because at least they will have some decent digital audio converters (dac's) for the price.

if including the receiver, i would check out

(for about $450 i have seen) http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665238643

(under $399)http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665186457

they both do 1080p upscaling, and 3 HDMI input

If you are looking just for a speaker package, it's hard to go past the Harman/Kardon HKTS-18 (more like $550 though) THIS IS WHAT YOU REALLY SHOULD GET (maybe with an Onkyo 605 or 705 receiver)

Keep saving and buy something you'll enjoy, spending an extra 200-300 dollars could make quite a difference. My experience with cheap systems is they just sound like crap. Good luck in your search.

Keep saving, wait awhile, that's my advice. I felt I couldn't wait, too, but later wished I had just done the right thing from the beginning. Find a way to get a receiver with HDMI for the best of blu-ray sound (uncompressed PCM, TrueHD, etc). Onkyo 605 at the least, some here will say wait til you can afford the 705.

The accessories is where BB and CC kill you.

Getting married and having a kid changed my life quite a bit (I'm still no Saint by any means), but the $400 ounces are a thing of the past..... my wife and kid cost me more money than I can possibly count!! but they're worth every penny. If you're buying a LOT of blu-rays, it might be a good Idea to get Netflix, and rent Blus, and use the money you're saving to get a new system..... be careful, there's a thing called "Upgrade-itis" once you catch the bug, it's tough to shake. I had to explain a $8,000 month to the wife..... I'll be folding laundry well into my 90's !!!!!

You can't go wrong with Onkyo. If I had $600 to spend, I would go with 605 and the SKS HT540 speaker rig. Not audiophile, but my rig sounds pretty nice for the cash spent.
