Default Ps2 to plasma

Sorry if this post is in the wrong thread!

I have a question regarding my ps2.

I have it connected to my panny 1080p plasma with a RGB scart cable.
My question is, will i get a better picture if i connect it via a component cable? And if the awnser is yes, what will be better? Connect it directly to my plasma or via my Onkyo 705 and use the up-scale to hdmi?

And i was kurious about, wy there are blackbars around the picture of my ps2 with games? I know wy the appear on movies on the top and bottom of the screen.

But with the ps2 is all around. is this to because of the aspect ratio?

Thanks!

SCART is the European version of component, which is far in advance than the US/World consumer standard at the time, until component came along.

If that's what you want. I'd test out the upconversion with a DVD player first. See if there's any improvement before you commit to buying a PS2 component cable.

I think those were the artifacts of PAL/NTSC games. Some PS2 games do have this weird black bars. I'm not a PS2 expert though.

Of course if you have a non-40GB PS3, just play the PS2 games on the PS3; provided that the PS2 games match the PS3's region. THe upconversion is done by the PS3.

SCART is not the European version of component. It does give you similar results, provided you're using it to send an RGB signal @480i. Unfortunately that is it's limitation; it won't send progressive signals, or anything higher than 576i.

So if you have any ps2 games that support 480p (not sure if there are any PAL games that do actually), you'd need component cables. Otherwise your SCART cable will do just fine.

Hope that helps any

SCART is not the europian equivilent to component component is an advancement just like HDMI is over S-Vid. Alot of europes early HDTVs have component slots so they could do HD but as they were little HD things out at the time no-one ever really used them

Thanks yeah this helps

i know hitman: blood money supports 480p
But that is the only one i can think off.

So i doesn't matter if i use scart or component.

But what of the up-scaler in my Onkyo 705. Will that give a better pq? or at least show less of the black bars around the screen? because it up-scales to 720p if i'am not mistaken.

i have not used my ps2 in awile but if i am not mistaken you have the option to set the ps2 to 4:3 or wide screen try setting it to widescreen and see if the bars go away, however this might just be an aspect ratio problem with the game and the black bars would be there no matter what

Its not a PS2 setting but a game setting for example 007 Everything or Nothing has 19:9 but MGS2 doesn't.

Thanks for all the reply's

I have set my ps2 to 16:9, or 4:3 or Full screen, but i think 16:9 gives the best image. in terms of aspect ratio (mostly with dvd movies).

but i think it is indeed a game setting, if the game accepts a aspect ratio of 16:9 the black bars are smaller but are still there.
And i gues i won't get a much better picture when i use a component cable and use the up-scaler in my 705. at least i won't be worth 30 euros.

So thank you all for the response!

@the admins: i think this topic can be closed!

just looked under ps2 system configuration and there is a setting for 4:3, full or 16:9 you look under system configuration then screen size. but this may be a case of 1.80:1 vs 2.35:1
