Default Sony Bravia SXRD KDS-50A3000 or Samsung HLT5687SAX

New member here...

Ive done a lot of searching around the forums and have found people raving about the Sony, but I havent found too much feedback about the Samsung.

I can get what I think is a good deal on both. I do realize that the Sony is out of production, but is it really that much better compared to a Samsung?

I just purchased a standalone Blu-Ray player and am looking for 1080p with 120mhz (if you couldnt guess already).

Any feedback would be much appreciated. I'm glad I found this board.

Ive been looking for a 60" online for a while, and I have found a few places for about $2k. Im trying to decide if I want the 50" for $1,500 or would like to pay another $600 for 10 inches.

And I know this sounds stupid, but I assume you have it set up well enought to look like the POTC displays at Best Buy, correct?

Not quite sure what you mean but yeah I have tweaked it over time and it looks amazing. I have seen them at best buy and they always looked bad to me like they just plugged it in and turned it on. Trust me you can get better results changing settings yourself!

I original had the previous model sony reverse projection 50 inch and I upgraded to the 60 couldn't have been happier. I think you can find cheaper than 2k now.

I have the 55" version of the Sony and I agree with aqupunk--couldn't be happier. I got it after suffering some serious disappointment with a Mitsubishi television

Ive purchased about 12 in the past week since getting the player. I even had to re-buy some of the titles I own on regular DVD that I felt HAD to be seen on blu-ray:

The Fountain
Sunshine
Troy

Yeah rebuying dvd to blu is a hard thing to do but sometimes ya just gotta! IE Gattaca, Resident Evil, Superman, House of 1000 corpses, Pirates of the Caribbean, Blade Runner and Bad Santa.

Careful, some online places like these are more pain than they're worth, assuming you can actually get them to sell you the TV at that price without anything else.

I got my KDS-60A3000 from an Agoraquest groupbuy for $1725 through Abt Electronics, and I would highly suggest getting an A3000 through an authorized sony dealer if you are to get one, especially in case the one shipped to you has geometry issues or tint issues. If you get a perfect A3000, it is perfect and a ridiculously awesome TV for the price (I've never seen better blacks on an RPTV) but if you get shipped an imperfect unit, I'd much rather have the peace of mind of dealing with an authorized dealer.

Granted, my unit was perfect, but I spent enough time on the AVS forums before my purchase to know what could happen. Plus, if you get one, I would highly suggest getting a Mack extended warranty through AVS- why? because it costs about $200 and adds 3 years to the manufacturer's warranty, inculding up to 2 bulb replacements in 3 years (covering them whether they reach the rated number of hours or not). In 3 years, you will most likely need a bulb replacement, and for the price of that and about $50 extra, you get an extra 3 years of general coverage on top of Sony's warranty. That amounts to 5 years of coverage on the optical block and 4 years of coverage on everything else. It's a ridiculously good value, and the only thing it doesn't cover is damage from power surges (get a belkin PF30L from buy.com for 34.99 and you get a true power conditioner and surge protector).

Just adding my thought process in shopping for a TV... If I had the money I would go for the Pioneer Kuro 1080p, but alas, I do not, and the Sony A3000 gave me everything I wanted plus size to boot for a great price.

I also have the 60A3000 and it freaking rocks.

I was looking at it and the Samsung HLT6189S I believe. The Sony blew it away in my opinion.

I'm very happy with my choice.
