My A/V room is about 22' x 18' located in the basement.
The projection screen is located at one end, while the couch is located up agaist the wall on the other end. What's the best location for the rear surround speakers in this situation? I'm only using my AV receiver in 5.1 mode right now, with 5 speakers and a sub. However, I'm thinking about adding two more rear speakers for a 7.1 setup. Any advice appreciated! ![]() |

Not sure of the speaker types, so that may hinder placement (mine can't be wall mounted, too Big) perhaps hang them on the wall behind the couch, at a slight downward angle..... or 3-5 feet from the ends of the couch on the wall, again up a little higher, but angled Down AND towards the T.V. center.
Another option is to put them on stands on either end of the couch, and point them in a manner where they are facing the television. If you go 7.1, it sounds like you're gonna want to put the surround speakers in the middle of the room on each wall, and the REARS behind the couch in one of the manners I suggested. |

If you want 7.1 in this kind of room you will have to have your side surrounds on stands a little forward of your couch, but to be honest i would avoid 7.1 in your room, i have the same kind of room and tried 6.1 and it just did not work. A 5.1 setup done right is better than 7.1 done poorly.

If he is up against the wall, the center rear speakers will fire over his head. His perception of that direction will not be behind him, it will be in front of him. That is why 7.1 will not work in this case. It is important to have sufficient space behind you for center rears.

It's also important to note that "foam" inserts are made for rear ported speakers if placement against a solid surface is necessary.... it helps them sonically, but Sir T. or Jim P. may have more info regarding this.
best of luck. |
