New to bluray. I have a sharp bd-hp20, but some of the old dvds that I have like the buffy dvds, it comes up with black bars on the sides of the screen. Is there any thing I can do on the bluray player that can stretch the screen to fill it?

the only thing that can be done is use the stretch/zoom function on your tv.

I was actually wondering about this... I have the opposite effect, all my DVD's fill the entire screen (well all the ones I have gone back and watched so far with my plasma and PS3), with no black bars at all... and no Im not complaining, I was just curious with all the different aspect ratios, is this an effect of upscaling of the PS3? My tv doesn't have a "Fill 16x9" option and its not on zoom.

I say try to get used to it. Otherwise your options would be to a) watch it in a distorted stretch view, OR b) watch it zoomed in, yet cutting off tops (scalps may be cut off) and the bottom of the original picture.

There are about 17 different aspect ratios in film - ever since television was introduced) so you'd best get used to it. Anyone dealing with Laserdiscs in Letterbox format is very familiar to the ratios. The size of your display (1.78:1) is in answer to what true HD broadcasts are supposed to be - not films. In projectors today, you can get a 2.35:1 ratio screen and use an anamorphic lens in front. You can go into the projo's menu and switch from 16X9 to letterbox then allow the lens to re-compensate for the horizontally squished image. The lens pulls it back out and fills the screen but without a masking kit (motorized), all your other ratios will have bars either on the sides or top and bottom anyway. Kinda stupid IMO.
