Default Remember Back in the Day when blu was Rumoured for the next ps2? Why not next ps2?

Way back when, people when blu-ray was in developement (like 2004/2005), when blu-ray on the ps3 was still a rumour, people threw around the idea of the ps2's new sku getting a blu-ray player.

Well now that it's coming time for a new ps2 again, what if it were to come equipped with a blu-ray player?

I know people are going to say because it would hinder the adoption of the playstation 3, but didn't sony themselves say they wanted the ps2 too last till 2010?

Thoughts and criticisms please!

Well, since I belive the Blu-ray laser is one of the most expensive components, as well as the cell processor, both used for Blu-ray playback, it would be pointless to not make it a PS3.

If the PS2 had enough processing power to playback BD content, then it sounds like a fine idea. Since it doesn't (by a LONG SHOT) you'd essentially have to take a standalone BD player and then add a PS2 into it -- which doesn't really make ANY sense.

The problem is not putting a blu laser in the ps2s.

The problem is that ps2 outputs SD signals. To make a blu-ray player out of it you would need to reconfigure the SKU and put an HDMI port on the PS2.

Also, I am not 100% certain if the PS2 has the horsepower for blu-ray. Its 9 years old almost. Think of any other piece of electronic equipment that is still being sold that is that old. While its a fantastic piece of equipment. Blu-ray is going to require it to output a resolution 600% greater than what it was intended to do and considering its that old, it probably just does not have the technological specs to be able to do that.

It would be do costly for Sony, they are making serious cash still off the PS2. Don't try to fix something that works.

Im sure if the PS2 hardware could handle blu-ray, since its all ready being mass produced, Sony would have made a blu-ray player that uses a very similar hardware structure as PS2. This would have allowed for some very high profit, yet cheap blu-ray players. However, the fact is they didn't which leads me to beleive that the EE can't handle blu-ray movie decoding and playback at 1080p levels.

I think the PS2 only has a 300MHz processor. No way in hell could it process Blu-Ray movies.
