Default Fox: 70K Discs Sold per Week, and doubling!

Quote:
"By the end of the first quarter, the format war is over," he [Fox exec. Mike Dunn] said, noting Sony's recently released PlayStation 3 game console with a Blu-ray drive had boosted sales.

"I'm selling 70,000 discs a week. Sales are doubling every week. ... Average PS3 owners buy 6 discs," he said.

Lionsgate Entertainment (LGF) studio director Steve Beeks also ruled out producing dual mode disks.

"If we end up with one format and diminish the confusion that consumers will experience, we get to the end game more quickly," he said.
Do the math. 1M PS3s X 6 discs per unit = 6M Blu-ray discs sold!

Well, I've had my PS3 for about 2 weeks now, and I am already up to 3 BD movies (4 once I go get Crank). Since I now have all the other stuff out of the way (controllers, remote control, games, etc.), I'll be buying more. 6 seems like a small number compared to my 300+ Dvds.

Very encouraging news from Fox. Lionsgate knows going neutral will prolong the format war.

I bought the PS3 in mid Dec and I have 30 BD's already!!! I think that the only thing holding BD sales up in Canada is the lack of content. Stateside, you receive BD's ontime and have a larger catalogue available.

The titles are the big hold-back all around I think. Personally, I own all 2 BluRay titles I want to own right now... Stargate and Aeon Flux. I've been renting some titles from netflix [which is nice ], but since we got our PS3, we've only gotten Tomb Raider. 1Q and early 2Q look nice for BluRay releases though, some will prolly be filtering their way here, I just hope that all the Warner titles aren't this Frankendisc...

The fact that Sony is not saying much says a lot. I think it doesn't want people to equate Sony with BD, even though much of the press already do.

The fact that Fox is bullish about BD's sales projection is also great and I believe it is more credible. By the time we get to the PS3's worldwide launch, lots of titles will already be available on BD - some of which are region coded and some are not. April to June will see some exciting news.

I have about 1700 dvds. I did not jump on the Blu Ray bandwagon because of the format war. Well, I bought the ps3 the other day and since then I bought 4 movies. I think its going to be an expensive year!

1700 is nothing. I'm just shy of 5000.

Welcome to the forum. Quite the contrarion handle. Do people mistake you for a basher elsewhere (if you use the same handle)?

I currently own 4 BD movies (including the one that was packed in with the PS3) and am planning to ad more to my personal library in the near future. What's funny is that I don't even own a HDTV yet.

So much for the M$/HD-DVD FUD about SD PS3 users not wanting to get a jump start on their high def collection.

btw One has to lol @ how this is being spun on AVS

I predicted people like yourself a year ago. When Amir was all on about the power of the HD DVD/DVD hybrid. I was pointing out that the PS/3 is an hybridizing piece of hardware. The PS/3 makes every BD disc a combo disc, without any need to increase production costs (DVD side) or kill aesthetics (ugly flippy). Those that wanted to future proof could buy a BD disc and watch it on regular TVs.

Thank you for proving me right!

I don't buy nor look at dvd titles anymore. The only movies that I purchase these days are those in blu-ray format! Considering the limited titles that are sold in Canada I have twenty five (25) blu-ray movies so far! I can not stress enough that they are BLU-RAY, I mean what else is there?

The funny thing is that they keep saying the PS3 users basically aren't buying movies like they said. It's funny to me because I just got through helping some family pick 3 or 4 movies to buy for their new PS3 (they hadn't even walked on of Best Buy with it). When I walk into Best Buy and see someone at the Blu-ray section, I speak to them for a min. or two.

Not only do I vote with my wallet, I help others to vote with their wallets (by creating the excitement).

Well also remember to remind them, whoever them is, that if they have Netflix or other such accounts, that there are BD movies to rent there as well. So even if they find BDs are more expensive, they can rent it first to see if they'd like it enough to buy it.

Lol, Nismobeach. Just read one of the posts in the thread you linked to at AVS.

Tolstoi said, "Or an other year, CES next year will be interesting."

Was this years CES that bad that they are already looking to next years CES?

I doubt that there will be much if anything HD-DVD at next years CES.
