I am confused and looking for some information on what is the better buy from a feature/functionality standpoint. I am new to the Blu-ray technology and I'm not an avid gamer. I do enjoy some games from time to time and I'm sure my son & grandsons will enjoy it when they come over.
Question: I was at Circuit City today looking at the Samsung & Sony Blu-ray HD DVD's. I was hoping the salesperson could sell me on which one was the better value for the money since they were both priced the same. What I didn't expect him to do is sell me on the idea of the PS3? He got me thinking that it might be a better value than the Sony Blu-ray HD DVD player for the obvious reason that it would include gaming. Is there any other signicant differences between the Standalone Sony Blu-ray & the PS3??? Thanks ![]() |

Yeah get a ps3....
it plays games it plays normal dvds and upscales them... it plays blu rays just the same as a standalone. and it can connect to the internet and you can upgrade your blu ray player anytime they have updates. The standalones right now dont have internet access so they wont be able to get the online upgrades in the future. Your son and grandson will most likely love you more for this also. I suggest getting it and a 1 year extended warranty. In the end its the same price as a blu ray standalone....SO WHY NOT? |

Right now the PS3 is the only final profile 2.0 player.
Oh, and its Blu-ray disc, or BD. Not HD DVD. ![]() |

The fact that the PS3 is Profile 2.0 and loads quicker than any other Blu-ray player should be reason enough to purchase it. It makes for a great game machine as well as media center too.

The Sharps aren't all that great neither. I'm not impressed by them. Unless the BB over here has them fudged up.

Isn't it true that you can only use the gaming controller or a specific Sony branded remote for the PS3? If so, how is that remote?

I like it....other than not having a back light on it...i think its pretty nice...and recommend it...but u can use the controller...i just never have.
Its only like 24.99 in stores...you can find it cheaper tho...i saw it at circuit city for 18 a while back. Last edited by BirdManJr; 03-25-2008 at 05:26 AM. Reason: Yes |

If "FUNCTIONALITY" for bargain is your prime concern, the PS3 wins without even a consideration for any other player on the market.
The system game controller will take less than 5 minutes to learn how to use and it is SO SIMPLE! Between the 'X' button, triangle button, and 'Start' button, you can do all that you need to do in order to control the film in its entirety. Last edited by Petra_Kalbrain; 03-25-2008 at 05:31 AM. |

The game controller sucks to use for Blu-ray IMO. Nyko make an aftermarket IR remote that has a IR reciver that plugs into the PS3. If you use that plug in IR addapter, you can program a Harmony remote to work. |

My vote also for the mighty PS3. IMO, it is the best value for money. Especially Sony has committed to evolve PS3 with blu-ray technology. One example is forthcoming firmware upgrade for profile 2.0.
It has a powerful processor and many functions are implemented in firmware. Due to this reason it is flexible and firmware upgradeable. Also, playstations have been built like tanks and they are reliable. We have a 5 year old PS2 and works without any problem in spite of the way that children abuse it. Go for PS3. |
