Default Do cheap Asian Blu-ray's Exist?

I recently started a blu-ray collection and noticed that some of my blu-rays don't seem to say specifically "printed in the US". These in question have subtitles in several asian and other languages. I know with DVD's Asian bootleg imports were a big issue. Is this an issue with blu-ray discs and if so how can I tell the difference and what is the performance/viewing difference?

There are no Blu-ray bootlegs yet

Many Sony pictures discs feature asian language subtitles.

Its because alot of blus are multiregion and so they need subs/lang to support them for example deja vu has english spanish and french lang all on the same disc.

True, although I dread when we start to see the pirate market attempt to sell SD-DVD's in Blu-ray cases, or if they copy the SD encode onto a BD-RW. Fortunately, that is cost-prohibitive right now!

Actually they already have happened they are pretending there blu-ray movies and they are sd dvds.

You can tell from the photographs on the dvd cases...

My poor mother was tricked by someone who thought it a blu-ray.

Is there a way to physically identify bly-ray and DVD disks. If a DVD disk is printed as blu-ray and placed in a blu-ray case with a fake print, is it possible to identify this as fake from the physical appearance of the disk?
Thanks.

You can put it in a standard DVD player and press "play" ! it's a dead giveaway!

Why would you even take the chance of buying bootlegs?

If it has a photograph of a blu ray box on a dvd case thats not a good sign...

The ps3 also can tell if its a dvd or a real blu-ray.
The fakes will appear as a dvd...

Which is the final dead give away.

If there is a physical difference between blu-ray and DVD, that will be useful to identify genuine BD before playing it. This will be extremely useful if you want to buy from a foreign transit airport. By the time you play the disk, it could be too late. (Of course you can ask them to play, if they are happy to do that - but this takes time and may not be practical.)

I have seen some type of coating on blu-ray disk that I couldn't see on DVDs. I am not sure how universal this is.

But there are links all over here where you can buy empty Blu-cases..... so it's only a matter of time until the "con-artists" adjust for this.......

I just buy from reputable sources to protect myself.

So far there not because they usually run bootleg dvd operations as well, from what i've seen they don't buy two sets of sleeves..

Guess they get a good deal now only if the fbi would monitor large sleeve orders..

when i get mine i always take them out of the case and hold them up to the light sideways you will see a kind of blue rainbow effect. but this won't help if you can't open the case, as for those times read the back of the case most bootlegs will have a bunch of words misspelled. if it does don't buy it

If this blue rainbow effect is universal for BD, it will be a good way to determine whether a disk is blu-ray at least if you could open the case.

The bottom of Blu-ray discs are blue / purple-ish. Every single one. You don't need to hold it sideways, or have light refract through it or anything special. Just look at it in decent light and it will look blue. There are slight difference between some kinds of Blu-ray discs (the company that makes Lionsgate titles, for instance, makes discs that look slightly different than Sony's), but they are all in the same range of blue/purple/periwinkle.

Standard DVDs have a range of colors as well, but they are all in the white/off-white/yellow range.

It should be immediately apparent whether a disc is a standard DVD, or a true Blu-ray. I've never seen a standard DVD that looked anywhere close to a Blu-ray disc, and I've never seen a Blu-ray disc that looked anywhere close to a standard DVD - and I own 100 BDs and 400+ standard DVDs.

Thanks. This is good. I will keep an eye on this and compare DVD and blu-ray physical appearance.
