Default Lack of HD competition.

does anyone think that with the death of HD-DVD and the lack of competition now we wont see a reduction in hardware prices as quickly as we may have and also do you anticipate a reduction in the number of blu ray special on places like amazon with the bogo's or any stores in general having blu sales?

maybe with the quick and brutal end to HD-DVD, we as the consumers will suffer dollar wise on the blu end now?

ahh..... I think quite the opposite...... now that there is one format, the sales will grow at an exponential rate since people aren't sitting on their hands "waiting it out" anymore...... it's like any other technology now.... prices will drop fast...... as more competition (other companies fighting to produce cheaper players etc) enters into the market.

Speakers are a bad example, but look at any AVR, DVD player, MP3 Player, Hard-Drives, Computers, Televisions....... technology prices are always high for the trail-blazers, and begin to fall quite quickly when the technology is more widely accepted.... LCD/Plasma prices are dropping like crazy.

Have you really not seen the multitude of other threads dedicated to this proposition---including the Blu-ray pricing/lack of sales complaints- POST HERE ONLY sticky?

Studios compete with each other for your disc-buying dollars. The death of HD DVD effectively removes only a single manufacturer from HDM competition; there are plenty of companies vying for your hardware budget.
The format war was not a good thing.

Maybe, on the other hand, maybe you're wrong.

Ever consider that before posting?

Considering it was either last week or the one before that had an Amazon BOGO sale. That's a little smidge of proof that you're wrong.

Aside from the fact that it's only Toshiba that isn't on Blu-Ray's side now and they still have to worry about recouping the billion dollar loss that they tallied up by trying to compete on the market by themselves and that manufacturers for Blu-Ray now will compete with each other for marketshare instead of as allies against HD-DVD.

Yup, looks like you're wrong.

For further evidence look up what happened to the prices of VHS players after Beta lost, or DVD players after VHS slipped below the 10% margin. They did not go down to rock bottom prices automatically, it's called the economies of scale, I know referencing things is scary, but please look it up.

The consumer was suffering from the war. The large number of fence sitters waiting for a resolution meant the economies of scale couldn't kick in, and the studios would hold back desired titles waiting for the numbers to arrive.

The end might have caused a temporary slow down in the artificially induced price drops, but it now provides the incentive for more choice and more innovation. And that competition will drive down prices nominally from here one.

The problem with HD DVD was that the margins were non-existent for anyone but Toshiba to make a unit. Considering how poor most of the decks were, how was that any good for the consumer?

The natural competition between the manufacturers will assure lower prices, and higher quality products. That is just the way business works.

Hmm. Denon vs Sony vs Panasonic vs Pioneer vs Marantz vs Philips vs Samsung vs Goldmund vs Sharp vs ... Exactly where is this "lack of competition" about which you complain? Please troll elsewhere...

Assuming there is a lack of competition is so simple minded and idiotic I wont even comment further to justify the original post.

There is competition. There is digital cable, hd satellite, and HD on thumb drive/flash cards.

Seriously, if you spend too much time obsessing about price you will miss out on great deals on Ebay/JR/Outpost/ and Amazon etc. Get up and move.
