I believe this was mastered in Standard Definition.

****! Hey, but 28 Days later was shot in standard definition except for the last scene, and that got the blu-ray treatment. It had the benefit of superior audio at least(and looking great in the final scene).

Why would it be standard definition? Why, why, why?

Have you seen the DVD? It's in 4:3 full screen with titles of films and people in black bar space that would normally be anamorphic. It's mastered in Standard Defintion.
