Default Any benefit of multichannel analog setup with upconverting DVD player?

I have a oppo DV-981HD player connected to my Onkyo TX-DS787 AV receiver using an optical cable. Would I get any improved 5.1 surround sound from standard DVDs using a mutlichannel analog set up? I do intend to purchase a blu-ray player in the future and would like to use my Onkyo receiver for that also. Any suggestions?

You can get the best sound from regular DVD through an optical cable. DTS is the best for regular DVD.

Really the only advantage of using the 5.1 analog is if you use the dvd-audio/sacd function. That is the only reason this player even has those outputs. If you are not using those features, don't worry about using the analog outs.

edit: now that I think about it, I've been looking for a good sacd/dvd-audio player...

Thanks for the information. It sounds like I will wait until I have a Blu-ray player to use the multichannel analog inputs on my Onkyo.

No advantage, unless your playing 5.1 surround SACD discs OR hooking up a blu-ray player where the blu-ray discs have 5.1 PCM analogue soundtracks.

on a PS3. I had no idea about SACD until I bought the PS3 but I am now addicted to the SACD format. Get all the SACD albums you can and encourage growth of that format.

It depends on which component has the best DAC, when you use the 5.1 analog outs the player does the decoding and with coax digital the receiver does the decoding. With most cheap dvd players you are better off letting the receiver do it but with some high end players you are better off letting the player do it, but for your Oppo better to just let your receiver do it.

I like the DVD-Audio as well though. If you haven't tried it out, I suggest Marvin Gaye "Lets Get it On"(the first time in a very long time I experienced "jaw-dropping music), B.B. King/Eric Clapton "Riding with the King", and The Beatles "Love". Not trying to start a sacd/dvd-audio flame-war here, there is much good in both...
