Default things I don't like about blu-ray.

Why is it such a pain it the butt to enjoy movies in HD?

Load times. Why does it take so long to load and for that matter, why does it have to load any thing? it's a movie and not a video game.

player updates. Why must I have to update the player all the time to get some newer discs to play?

DVD and laserdisc was so easy. you just put the disc in and a second or 2 later you are watching the movie.

I enjoy watching movies on blu-ray for the awesome picture and sound, but man getting to that picture and sound can sure be a pain in the butt to get to.

With that said, will blu-ray ever get faster and pain free to use?

Thanks and intelligent answers only please.

The best blu-ray players - Panasonic, Sony, Samsung and LG. Go with a newer model of those and you should be just fine. DVDs had worse load times if you ask me...

Never been a pain for me.

If I recall correctly, the first generation of DVDs players weren't the quickest to load. And, given the advanced nature of the new technology, I can understand that it will take longer to surpass that little hurdle. As to why it has to load? The discs are essentially designed like a video game when you think about it. With the way in which all of the functionality surrounding the film presentation itself is designed, that is all software based... menus, extra features, BD-Live interactivity. Besides, when it comes to standalone players, the onboard memory is kept rather small in order to keep unit price low. I remember reading somewhere that the RAM is actually the most expensive part of the players. So much so that it alone can drastically up the production cost by increasing it one level higher.

Why must you update your PC/MAC operating system? Why must you update your video card? Why must you update anything? Why, to ensure that continued functionality in the face of ever tweaking performance upgrades to both software and hardware. Would you rather have to buy a new player every time you run into a disc that won't play?

I have seen a lot of players in action and I only once saw it take longer than 2 minutes to load the disc menu. Is a 2 minute wait really that annoying? Humanity is becoming so impatient these days.

As with everything, it will definitely improve. It's just a matter of time and, deity forbid, patience.

DON'T !!!

Personally I don't mind the 15 second or so wait to enjoy it the way I get to .

I've had my 2550 for A year & only had to update it once , That was after the 4th BD I bought that did not play ~ I have 1 BD at present that does not play

well my HD-DVD player not in use anymore was the SLOWEST loading machine in the history of mankind! I mean I think it was like 3 minutes for it to open the loading tray and a total of 5 minutes before a movie would actual start! My PS3 is lightening fast I love it. PS3 from what I understand is still the best Blu-Ray player on the market. Also its DTSHD-MA and Dolby TrueHD decoder is one of the finest on the market if not the finest. JC

I guess you dont remember the early days of dvd players then. They were just as problematic as blu-ray players are now. The first coupe of years of dvd were rocky to say the least. My Oppo bdp-83 is faster at blu-rays and dvds than any player ive had, counting stand alone dvd players. The ps3 almost as fast as that. Neither the oppo or ps3 require constant updates to play movies. Hows that for an "intelligent" answer. I love how you generalize The whole Blu-ray market on your lack of experience. Try again

I have a Sony BDP-S350 and its load times are acceptable, but with regard to DVD players, my old Sony DVP-NS400D from back in 2000 loads DVDs nearly instantaneously. From the moment the tray closes to video is a couple seconds, seriously.

Before I got my Sony BDP-S350, I bought a Sony upscaling DVD player (model number escapes me at the moment), but I had a waiting time before DVDs would play. Needless to say, I was disappointed in that, and didn't understand why the "newer" technology was slow to load a DVD.

All in all, I'm very happy with my S350, as it plays all my discs without a problem (approaching 150).

If BD load times could be eliminated, that would be a substantial improvement to the format, all around.

1) Not once have I found it a pain in the butt to enjoy an HD

2) I put in the Blu, go pop popcorn and when popcorn is finished, the Blu is ready to go. Can't get better then that.

3) I have never had a player firmware update or needed one.

4) My popcorn would not be finished. Who wants to start a great movie before the popcorn is finished??????

5) I open the player tray, put in the disc and close the tray. I don't see how they can make it easier?????

Opps, I just noticed:
"Thanks and intelligent answers only please"

Maybe I should not have posted.

As for load times i am curious as to what player you have, my sony s300 was ungodly slow but it got faster after a firmware update. My panny bd-30 is not bad, talking like a minute maybe, which to me is nothing at all, its not like i am freaking out over 60 seconds.

As for firmware, this i agree on. Don't know why they have not come to a standard yet. J6p is not gonna be happy when he gets a movie and has to spend hours online to figure out he needs a firmware update, especially if that j6p has no internet and has to mail away for that update. If they were updates for functionality as in adding options, increasing speeds, etc... that would be one thing. However firmware REQUIRED to simply play a movie needs to be remedied soon.

I only ran into one disc i had to update to play, it was my panny and Kill Bill one i believe. Had to forgo watching the movie for about an hour so not that big of deal, but inconvenient for sure.

Curious also if all the ps3 fanboys on this thread have ever waited to update firmware or if it is automatically done and connected to the net? or if they just do it as soon as it is released. I just find it kind of hard to believe with all the java discs and changing blu-ray manufacturing that not one blu actually required an update to play or if they didn't realize since they had already done the update.

EDIT: i bought my first dvd player as soon as they were released i think 97 or 98, when there were only like 15 movies available lol, waterworld, willy wonka etc... and they had dvd's in jewel cases and most were flippers. That dvd player was slow as well, although i don't think it topped my pre firmware s300 which took like 3 minutes or more from power up to play.

I'd rather deal with load times due to technology limitations than have to be force to watch the FBI/Interpol message basically making you feel like a crook even though you bought your own copy. How you are managing to skip these forced conditions on DVD is bewildering.

As for updates you need to realize the format isn't a fixed format but a living set of standards. They take advantage of the Information Age. You do not have to buy into this and can leave the updates until you have a real reason to update.

As for intelligent answers maybe you should consider some specification research and get authoritative information instead of asking 'the general public'.

Many people complain about BD load times. This problem affects only some players. I use an inexpensive Sylvania NB501SL9 player (profile 1.1) that loads most BDs in ~20 seconds and DVDs in ~10 seconds. A few BD movies took much longer to load such as A Haunting in Connecticut that took at least 45 seconds to load.

One feature of BD movies that seems to increase the load times for some movies is BD java. On my player, A Haunting in Connecticut took a take a long time to load the BD java for this disc.

The one aspect of the BD specification that does not do a lot for me is BD java. I am not entirely sure what BD java does other than interactive menu features such as bookmarking.

I'm all for having an opinion, but this is a mute point. Blu-ray, much like dvd has growing pains, but compared to older tech (VHS,Magnetic Disc) this is a huge leap in overall user friendliness. Think about you they actually try and give you an option of of trying to fix a player issue from the comfort of your own home. Relax and enjoy this or become a Wall-E society!

My guess is that you probably have an older player, in which case I can sympathize with your load time concern. I started out with a Sony BDP-S1, which I (or anyone else) would be a liar if I said that I wasn't somewhat disappointed with the load time, especially for a thousand dollars. Even worse was its tendency to freeze on a frame somewhere in the middle of a movie. The only recourse was to turn the machine off, reboot, go back to the scene and hope it didn't freeze again, which it often did. Software upgrades did not solve those problems. My second player, a Sony BDP-300, wasn't much better. It appears those problems have been resolved with the newer players. I now have a Panasonic BD60, which has worked perfectly. I have not heard about any major problems with the latest players, and they are priced right.

Yeah I kinder now stand at 70% with Bluray its produced some rubbish titles and that have major flaws!

The more things change. The more they stay the same.

Terminator 2 is the same version that has been produced for laserdisc VHS as it inherits the same green coloured smearing on all the previous releases on laserdisc and DVD and its only been made worse with Bluray!

You need an eye to spot these little LARGE THINGS!

2001: A Space Odyssey is the same version produced for the dts70mm late 1990’s that ended up on DVD then on HD-DVD and now on Bluray its not the true original version with all the crazy wild dialogue panning going on over the LCR too bad Bluray can’t support true-five screen like Todd-AO!

Yeah the more things change. The more they stay the same.

I have the original ‘2001’ version well it has the rest of the dialogue panning folded onto the mix LCR on the laserdisc.

Cliffhanger has reversed stereo fronts and split-surrounds and I would expect this with VHS Hi-Fi tapes of the 1980’s! This is really taking the pi$£ now!

The Bluray titles are around average the same cost of what a Laserdisc was!

I and most others had Terminator Salvation lock-up on the main menu. The issue as now been resolved but shouldn’t have happened on this so called better than over DVD laserdisc format!

I only have few Bluray titles that looks like someone had the time to do it RIGHT! And that isn’t just good enough.

I would treed step very careful on just buying all these Bluray titles up, because it seems like one big HUGH money scam to me now!

Yeah I’m angry alright as consumer!

As for Bluray load up timing it only takes less than 20 seconds.

Or you could just improve on that, with an HTPC. The only true future proof Bluray player.

The current PS3 will eventually run out of processing.

A very good player, except for the noise and excessive heat.
We have a PS3, but the OPPO is our choice for movies!
