Question how do i know if i am getting the most from my tv/ps3?

(didnt know where to put this because it falls under both hdtv discussion and ps3 discussion so ill put it here)

i have a relatively old set (Samsung HP-S5033 720p native, can do 1080i) http://www.hdtvsolutions.com/Samsung-HP-S5033.htm

and i own a 40gb ps3 (connected via hdmi)

i was just wondering how i would get optimal picture quality from these two things without paying a professional for calibration.

i have heard of the DVE on BD, but would this really help me?

plus, what would the ideal settings for my ps3 be with respect to my tv?

and would anyone know of the ideal settings for my tv as well? it has a "movie" mode, but i dont know if this would help

a lot of people say to just play around with it and see what looks best but i really dont know how to do that and worry i might ruin the factory settings (which may or may not be top notch to begin with)

any help would be greatly appreciated

my set can go up to 1080i as well, but i set the settings to 720p. during movie playback, there are a/v settings you can fiddle with and i leave it on what looks best to me until i get a dve blu disc. i believe it can help people like us.

edit: during playback hit triangle. at the upper left of the menus there is a/v settings where you can fiddle with the settings including bitstream and lpcm

I rented the DVE BD from Amazon, using the test patterns helped out a lot. Just use the test patterns, unless you want to get put to sleep. I used the 1080i setting. I just watched Pirates of the Caribbean and I was blown away again.

Most people say to set your RGB to Limited. Also turn Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr on.
