I am considering a PS3 or other player on my still pretty damn good CRT based Hitachi 57TWX20B.
It has one DVI input no HDMI. I currently run my HDTV from my Directv HR20-100 via it's HDMI connection with great results. I have a HDMI/DVI adapter will I be able to enjoy the picture quality of Blu-ray and SD upconversion on these units using an adapted connection? |

yes.
But you should use an HDMI-DVI cable. adapters can cause potential handshake troubles with HDCP. |
