Default Sylvania BD player up for preorder - $399.99?!

It's up at amazon. Full model number is NB500SL9. Price is listed as $399.99. The Funai press release at CES said that "retail price is projected to be under $300."

That price would put it at the same level as the Sony S350. So street prices are going to be much lower if the Sylvania is to get any sales.

Yeah Funai/Sylvania put out some badddd products. Don't expect this player to be any different. Always spend the extra cash and get a reputable brand. $400 dollars must be a mistake...

Try searching Amazon by the model number, or it will be hard to find. Amazon does not have the player in stock, and we are informed that "Usually ships in 3 to 5 weeks". Hopefully the price will drop to $300 after a month or so.

Well it does include a HDMI cable, and if Monster is to be believed that should be a $79 throw in! So it's nearly $300 now!

And in real news... that's ridiculous.. I can't see how they could justify a $399.99 price on a Profile 1.1 player when the PS3 is Profile 2.0 at the same price?!

You know, I heard that Insignia (Best Buy Brand) is going to put one out. I forgot where I read it though, I will post a link once I find it. That'd be very interesting...because Best Buy pushes their brand Insignia a lot. They make decent products. I bought one of their portable DVD players and it looked better than my girlfriend's Panasonic.

Note that the current MSRP of Sony's BDP-S300 BD player is $499, yet sells regularly for $399 or less. Let the Sylvania come out and it should be down to $300 or less.

Also, I'm surprised at those of you here who are saying that Sylvania makes bad products... sure, they aren't on the same level as Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc, but I've had nothing but good luck with their products... and have been impressed with their quality for a "budget" brand.

There are a lot of people that want a "cheap" BD player. Drop the price of this baby to $250, and it will sell.

You can't judge it on the Sylvania name since its only a lable put on it by Funai. Remember that Funai makes over half of the DVD players sold in the USA today. It appears that Funai (as least for DVD players) has not been just supplying the low cost house brands at CC, BB, Walmart, and the budget brands such as Magnavox, Emerson, Sylvania, etc., as they are rumored to also be supplying higher end models to some of the premium brand names (e.g, Denon). Bottom line for Funai BD players we won't know how good or bad they are until we actually get our hands on them. Also by year's end Funai may be OEM'ing multiple models at different price points for their customers.

I do agree with the earlier comments that the street price of the Sylvania BD player should be closer to $299. It does appear that Sylvania has set the list price at $399 but Amazon can always lower their price before this unit is actually released.

Its also now listed at a lower price (but over $300) by a few other etailers such as:
- Macmall
- onsale.com

Also remember that we have a major factor operating against declining prices for just about any category of consumer electronics and that the falling value of the US Dollar. This drives up the price of imported products.

Is there a review on this player. If this happens to be a good quality player, it potentially could pressure big brand names.

Just an update, the price of the player is now $350 in Amazon. Needs to drop another $50, in my opinion.

Either way, this could put pressure to bring the price down. Though I wouldn't touch it, it might be that one thing that brings people into the Blu-Ray market more readily. Sylvania is a popular brand in those all purpose stores in small towns (insert Pamida). This could bring BD players to those people who are less likely to buy a player. As well, most of those stores don't carry higher end players.

I agree, at $350 it's still overpriced.
