Ronin has some great car chase sequences but as a over all film your better off going with the Departed.

Ronin has very long car chases and a somewhat very simple story.
The Departed is a cat and mouse game with a mobster insider in the state police, a undercover cop in the mob, and each side trying to figure out who it is. You also get a stellar acting job by Nicholson as a Boston mob boss.
Still liked Infernal Affairs trilogy better though.

My vote goes to Ronin. Excellent movie, extremely underrated. I ordered it this morning for $9.49 at Amazon. Great deal.

Ronin is a solid movie. Its has a good story with great moments. Departed is a classic! The story is OUTSATNDING and the pace of the movie is PERFECT. Thats the diffrence.

The Departed is much better in my opinion. Incredible story, incredible acting...and Mark Wahlberg's incredible hair! You can't go wrong.

Ronin:
The Cold War may be over, but a new world order keeps a group of covert mercenaries employed by the highest bidder. These operatives, known as "Ronin," are assembled in France by a mysterious client for a seemingly routine mission: steal a top-secret briefcase. But the simple task soon proves explosive as other underworld organizations vie for the same prize...and to get the job done, the members of Ronin must do something they've never done before...trust each other.

Departed:
Two men from opposite sides of the law are undercover within the Massachusetts State Police and the Irish mafia, but violence and bloodshed boil when discoveries are made, and the moles are dispatched to find out their enemy's identities.
Plus Departed is directed by Scorsese, features a stronger cast, better dialogue, and way better storyline.

If you get Ronin you will probably watch the car chases over, but maybe not the whole film. Departed is one that you'll watch once, put it on the shelf for a bit then watch the whole film again, and not just pieces of it.

nobodies mentioned this so far but RONIN got awful reviews as far as the
blu-ray transfer. It's an MPEG 2 release and from what I've read appears to
hardly be an upgrade from the dvd... check the review from this very site...

I would go with THE DEPARTED like others here-- not only a great movie but
a great blu-ray as well.

RONIN is a good movie-- but I would wait for a better release down the road!

Very different films. Ronin is an all action thriller with some of the very best car chases. The blu is very low on features compared to the DVD and needs a reissue. The Departed is a plot driven police thriller/drama and a very good blu. Contrary to all the other posters here I'm not keen on The Departed, I felt it was pretty much pointless when compared to the superb Hong Kong original Infernal Affairs

No contest--Ronin. The Departed is a poor imitation of Infernal Affairs that became over-Hollywoodized, overproduced and overhyped. Scorsese lost focus somewhere along the line, and Nicholson couldn't even keep a consistent Bostonian accent.

Tell you what, since we both LOVE the Broncos...everyone else can stop laughing now....I'll give you a tip, The Departed will be $7.99 on Blu come Friday at Best Buy, you swing by, grab two copies and I'll trade you my Ronin for one of the copies.

I've watched Ronin twice now, once on SD years ago, once on Blu. I'd be willing to trade my copy for The Departed, which I watched twice the first day I ever saw it and have watch multiple times on my SD copy.

PM if you're crazy enough to make this deal...heck, I'd prolly sell you my Ronin, just to make it simpler.

Infernal Affairs is awful. The western audience stamp of approval is basically derived from the typical "if we don't understand what they're saying (except for reading the subtitles), it must be brilliant." Flying Daggers, Hero, Curse of the Golden Flower are also all awful movies if you actually understood anything in the native context. Speaking of accents, you wouldn't believe how awful some Hong Kong actors' accents are when speaking Mandarin or Cantonese.

Ronin is easily the better film. It exudes a wonderful sense of cool without trying too hard. It's also perfectly paced and executed. One of the best spy thrillers made.

The Departed is, quite simply, a mess and one of Scorcese's lesser films.

+1

Get Ronin and then get Infernal Affairs. I like Scorsese but did not care for his remake of Infernal Affairs.
