Just wait ! You will be sorry if you don't have 5.1. I am checking into the 7.1 right now ! Don't waste your money ! Surround sound means 5.1. Anything less would be a let down.

Wait. If I don't have a 5.1 setup does that mean I can't watch or listen to awesome blu ray dvd's? Like such as I am Legend where it says Dolby TrueHD 5.1. Does this mean I need at least 5.1 or does it mean that 5.1 is the max? So I can still have 3.1 and watch and listen to blu rays right?

You are able to listen to movies in 3.1, but it is not as the studios had intended it to be heard. Most are in 5.1. Things are moving to 7.1 now. For that kind of money you could start a nice theater. Look at the Onkyo 605 (about 300) that will give you HD sound. Each speaker will reproduce sound in the way it was meant to be heard. For speakers, The Klipsch Quintet III series is about 499.(It would come with 5 speakers) Get a decent sub for 200and you are in business. Please go listen to the 5.1 and 7.1 to see if you hear a difference. After all it is your ears that will be the true judge. Let us know how it goes.

i disagree. i dont think he needs to buy the whole 5.1 system at once, and if he does with limited $$, that would be a let down. buying good quality (1) HDMI receiver (2) front L/R tower, (3) center, (4) sub (5) surrounds as he saves it would be best IMHO

You will not be disappointed with the eD subs or speakers. Those A6-6T6 Towers kick some serious butt. If you have any questions about them, just ask.
As for going for 3.1 vs. 5.1 or 7.1, don't listen to everyone trying to push you into getting complete surround sound right away. You're better off making sure your fronts and center are great quality and then building from there over time as money allows. Your blu-rays will still sound superb with lossless audio- the only thing you'll be missing are the surround effects until you get surround speakers. By focusing your money on the fronts and center, you will get the best out of the most important part of the presentation, and you will have a great setup for music. As for 5.1 or 7.1, the more important question is your room layout... a room that allows for a good 5.1 setup but a crappy 7.1 setup (like with your couch against the wall for instance) will always sound better in 5.1. When you get surrounds, consider getting more A6-6T6 MTM's if you like to listen to music in 5 or 7 channel, otherwise you should be fine with their 5T5's or 5TC's. As another person who was willing to take a risk with eD after auditioning a lot of other speakers, I highly recommend them and would say you would be hard pressed to find other speakers of that quality for that price. You hear a lot about Klipsch and Paradigm Monitor on this board for quality budget speakers- I would compare these to those by saying that they are warmer and mellower on the highs (not sure if the Paradigms I listened to were fully broken in, but they seemed a bit bright), and have similar clarity and range. They seem to bit a bit more directional though, so positioning should be paid attention to. It seems like you have made a solid choice- let me know if you have any other questions. |

Thanks for your help. This really helped me with my decision. After a bit I will probably pick up 2 A6-6T6 MTM's for the sides or rear. I'll get pictures of my area where the audio will be. |

I want to be completely clear when I say this.
If you want to buy a surround receiver and only START with a good center and some fronts, then I whole heartedly believe in that. You will have an excellent sound stage that can grow. My original post asking you to change your mind was geared toward your use of the term 3.1 system. I am assuming you are speaking of a packed system like the Bose. I promise you, that system will NOT grow with you and I am most certainly not trying to talk you into anything. Buy a surround receiver and start with what you can and add surrounds later. Please do not limit yourself to a system that will only support a front soundstage with a sub. You will inevitably visit someone who has surrounds or see a great movie in a theater with surround and you will find yourself buying a new receiver. So...buy at least a 5.1 receiver (great prices right now.) and by all means, START with the fronts. Later on...see about the surrounds. It is always better to have the option and not use it then to slam the gate on a new possibility. All the surround channels are, are extra frequencies that travel to those speakers and they sound great when you have them, but you won't sacrifice any quality at all when you don't use them. Enjoy your new system and have fun building your Blu Ray collection. I hope you find all the movies you want. later, |

What we are saying is that if you are building a speaker system from scratch and you're on a budget, it's better to spend that budget on your fronts and center and get the surrounds as you save enough money. The surrounds add a lot to the experience, but your fronts and center are by far the most important components of any speaker system. This especially holds true if you listen to a lot of music. |

Thanks guys for the support. I will probably buy this set, along with the Onkyo 605 receiver. My first blu ray's will most definately be The Patriot and I Robot, which I heard is superb on blu ray both visually and audio.
![]() Heres the cheapest price for the Onkyo 605: $269.00 http://www.consumerdepot.com/product...referer=google Last edited by dbecks; 04-21-2008 at 01:53 AM. |
