Default 720p Playstation 3 question

I have a 1080i/720p Tv. Would playing the system on 720p look just as good as 1080i/P or would you just leave it at 1080i

i guess it depends on your hdtv. my tv manual states that when i have the option to select 1080i or 720p, i should select 720p only. regardless of what you choose, its the same like hte previous person mention .

My take on it is to go with the previous repliers and say go for 720p.

My friend asked the same question and I told him go 720p. He tried both 720p and 1080i for a while and said that 720p looked smoother and better overall.

Since it's progressive, it shows the whole picture every time it refreshes. Interlaced shows only half of the picture as every other line of resolution. Therefore, you are technically getting 540p resolution (1080 / 2 = 540).

But here's the thing, 720p is used for fast paced kind of stuff such as sports on ESPNHD or when playing a video game. Reason is because it can keep up with a fast ball or a rocket flying through the air and not look jagged. For movie viewing 1080i is what most choose when dealing with a 720p/1080i set. This is because you'll technically be able to see the detail in the film.

Since I have no test equipment, it could be a bit subjective. But back in Jan 07, when I got my PS3 to view movies on a 720P TV, 1080i from the PS3 looked much better then sending it 720P. However, with the latest firmware updates, I noticed a big improvement in 720P down conversion. First gen store demos I saw often did such a poor job of down-converting that it left PQ just above 480P DVD. So for the early players, 1080i was often a better choice, but 720P works fine for me now.

While I am pro 1080P for blu-ray movies, many PS3 games are native 720P. A PS3 outputting 720P via HDMI to a 720P set produces the best results for thoes games. 720P up-converted to 1080P on a 1080P set came across as being a bit softer.

Surely it would depend on the physical resolution of the screen. I'm guessing it's not a 1920x1080 panel, so 720P is probably going to be closer to what it really is (whether 720 pixels high or 768).
