Ok, well i've been saving up for a home theater setup for my 42" Toshiba Regza hdtv. I've got about $1000 to spend right now... I already know everyone is going to suggest the Onkyo 605, which is understandable. My question is, will the Onkyo 505 do me justice for what i am looking to do? I'm planning on running my Hddvd player and PS3 to the Onkyo, and am wondering if maybe i could save $100-150 buying a little bit of an older reciever and put that extra money towards quality speakers. Considering i really dont want to pay a cent more than $1000, would going with the 505 be in my best interest? I've noticed that both the 505 and the 605 have HDMI compatibility which is obviously a huge factor. Here is the link for the 505, with the 10% off deal i could probably score the reciever for around $200
![]() http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onkyo...oductDetail.do What do you guys think? And any speaker suggestions keeping my $1000 TOTAL budjet in mind? ![]() |

I think you would be highly dissapointed with the 506.
It is a 'passthrough' system meaning you would need an optical cable for audio, therefore defeating the whole purpose of an HDMI connection. (no Lossless audio) "HDMI Pass Through (3in/1out , 1080P compatible) — A separate audio connection is necessary" |

The Onkyo 605's should be dropping in price very soon as the new 606's are supposed to be shipping to retailers this month:

Go to the onkyo website and download the manual for the receiver you want.
It will show you the front panel, the back panel, and let you know everything you need to know without hearing it. Then, when you go for a listen, you will be ready to make your decision, Please also consider Yamaha as your choice of receiver. |

Thanks alot guys for all of the quick responses. I figured there was a catch to the 505/506. I'm just really nervous about investing in the new home theater system because this will be my first time
![]() ![]() ![]() I guess i just think of all the times i've spent my money on stuff that didn't quite live up to my expectations. But i really dont think that'll be the case here. I've decided to stalk the internet and local electronics stores for the best prices on the Onkyo 605. Circuit city has a 10% off deal right now which would bring the reciever at about $340 plus tax. However, i think i can do better than that! I guess i'm going to wait for the best possible deal on the 605 and then go from there and select some speakers. Special thanks to CrakinHeads, your knowlegde in home theater is much appreciated! ![]() |

P.S. I checked your link and the Onkyo you're looking at is Video pass through only through HDMI. Not a good way to go. This one is the best bang for your buck. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onkyo...oductDetail.do It's 150.00 more but well worth it. Very future proof. I seriously think you will be disappointed if you go with the cheaper one. Just my 2 cents. Last edited by obiwopkenobi62; 04-25-2008 at 01:11 PM. Reason: update. |

I'd recommend the Yamaha receiver, and getting the Fronts/Center and waiting on the surrounds/sub..... You'll be happy later that you waited.
Honestly Surrounds don't need to be top of the line either..... you can use $100/pair of surrounds with $2,000/pair fronts and be VERY pleased..... The sound from the surrounds really isn't that demanding, you really should put all you can into the front-3 |

Actually speaker placement for 7.1 can be problematic in a lot of living rooms if that's where this is. |
