Default My Blu-ray player died today :(

Well, my Sony 1000ES Blu-ray player died today, I had it since it was released and it was a great Blu-ray player!

Rest in peace Sony ES1000

It is time for a new upgraded player

I would like another Sony player, I am thinking of picking up either the S590 or S790 but I am leaning to the S790 due to better build and 4K remastering

To anybody who has the S790, how do you like the player?

Thank you for your replies!

Outside of 4k, dual HDMI and a slightly better processor, in real world performance they are pretty much the same. And 4K for me is a non seller as before you actually need it you will probably get a native 4K player, and anyways chances are your 4K TV or pj will most certainly have better processing for non 4K material. If you do need 2 HDMI then it's def the best player out there outside of Oppo. Outside of price, any reasons you're not looking into an Oppo 103?

I looked at the Oppo 103 and I thought about buying it but the price is a little high and the Sony is cheaper and I am leaning towards the Sony due to the lower price

Getting 4 years out of a BD player isn't very long IMO. My old man still owns a Sony DVD player which he uses almost everyday, he bought it over a decade ago for less than au$250 and it's still running perfectly fine (my Sony DVD recorder in my main setup has lasted me over 7 years). Lasting only a few years seems to be a trend with many Sony, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba etc etc blu-ray players. Oppo's are extremely well built and should last you a long time. If you are having to buy a new blu-ray player every few years then it all adds up, and may as well have just bought an Oppo to begin with. I'm pretty confident that my Oppo will last a decade if not more and would be confident betting money on that. If it does it certainly was worth the small amount extra.

I have about 100-140 dvds that Im never gonna flip to blus so I was rather upset when it stopped playing 50 first dates last night. I took it back today and go my money back. not sure what to do now.
He ended up getting an Oppo 103.
When or if my SONY BDPs ever die, they'll be replaced with Oppo BDPs.

And this is coming from Mr Sony himself (check his sig ) I only have the BDP-80 and am still impressed with it. have had it since they came out and still a solid player, so I can only imagine the higher end models.

Edit: And Oppo's CS by itself is worth a big part of the extra price, I've sent emails to them on weekend nights and still received replies within a few hours

Here's a link to my comparison of the BDP-S590 and 790
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=139

In short my opinion is if you don't need AV separation the 590 is a better value.

I am glad I ordered the S790 instead of the S590 since I have over 300 DVDs that has not been released or will never be released on Blu-ray and it is going to be nice to see standard DVDs upscale to better quality

Love Blu Ray,

I'm Sorry for your loss.

I would get the Sony 590. I use the cost club version with a slightly different model number (BX59 I think.)

Or the 790, I guess if you can find it on sale or something.

I have the Sony S590 that I bought for $100 at Target and the thing is excellent. Plays everything I throw at it.

I bought the same player off Amazon for $105 about 5 months ago and love it. Not only does it play 3D and 2D flawless, but it also streams wirelessly over VUDU and Amazon without ever buffering.

I have the Sony BDP-S590 and it is flawless as a Blu-ray player, Netflix streamer, and DLNA device. The BDP-S790 is largely a waste of money unless you NEED the upscaling (99% won't) improvement or dual HDMI. For the added cost, it's not worth it for the majority of consumers.

I wasn't saying that there still aren't plenty that last a long time, I was more so meaning that compared with the amount of DVD players from a decade ago from the same manufacturers, that it seems more blu-ray players aren't lasting as long and are of lower quality parts wise. That's not to be taken as anything factual, but rather I just feel it holds truth based on my own observations.

The Sonys are a steal at $100 and a lot easier to swallow for a lot of people. If you get 4 years out of it they are still a bargain compared to a $500 player. Do you really think you are going to get 20 years out of the OPPO? Any media player you buy now is likely to be pretty outdated in the next 10 years. Not bashing OPPO at all, I'd love to have one, it's just not in the budget.

I can also contest to this! I have one of Panasonic's first generation blu-ray players (DMP-BD30) that I've purchased 4 years ago, and it's still playing without a hitch. It's twice the size of the blu-ray players they're making now, and much sturdier. The loading time is a little slow, but it's tolerable. Panasonic doesn't make their blu-ray players like they use to! The best choice for a well build, high quality BD player would be either an Oppo, Denon or a Pioneer.
