Default UnCommon courtesy

I had a very funny thing happen to me today. This incident pushed me to finally communicate what I'd been observing for a very long time: the disappearance of common courtesy. For example:

This morning, I was walking into my office building for work. As I opened the door (I was carrying my laptop in a shoulder bag, my morning newspaper, my lunch bag, and my coffee), I glanced behind me to see a gentlemen about 10 steps behind me. As such, I held the door open for him. As he passed me, he offered no "thank you", no smile, no indication that my gesture of common courtesy was welcome. The gentleman just continued to the guard desk.... Am I the only person who finds this rude? This happens weekly, by the way.

Also, when did "turn signals" start becoming obsolete? I was required to use it when changing lanes during my driver's test 14 years ago.

The left lane, unless I'm mistaken, is a "passing lane," correct? It's not a "get in this lane to be passed" lane.

Perhaps I'm just a bit uptight, but I've just seen common courtesy really fly by the wayside. It's now more common to be rude to people, or completely ignore their existence as humans! It's as if being courteous is the exception.... so annoying. [/end rant]
