Just saw this over on TVShowsonDVD.com -- evidently Mill Creek might be releasing the series on Blu-Ray:
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/n/22066 Here's hoping that Universal and Mill Creek scan the negatives for a true HD remaster, not simply an upconversion/cleanup of the current discs. If you upscaled the existing DVD masters, the picture quality wouldn't look terrible, but the series would certainly benefit from a proper 1080p rescan. Undoubtedly the visual effects (the wormhole "vortex" and other CGI shots) were composited in lower-resolution NTSC standard definition, but unlike (for instance) Star Trek: DS9, the VFX work was infrequent enough that if they were to simply upscale those shots from SD to HD, it would probably pass muster. Universal likely won't be wanting to spend any more money on this release than necessary anyhow, so there's not going to be any HD effects re-rendering, but as long as the camera negative itself is properly rescanned in at least 2K high-definition, fine by me. Also, if this happens, would love to see the episode-ordering in the first two seasons finally restored to its proper storyline sequence (i.e., with "Summer of Love" and "Prince of Wails" immediately following the pilot, etc.). FOX epically screwed up the air-order (very similar to Firefly), with cliffhanger resolutions airing weeks before their actual setups finally appeared (such as the tidal-wave). Interestingly, the NBC Universal Store totally removed the Complete Series DVD set from their website a little over a month ago (along with Season 5). Could just be a fiscal relisting coming down the road, or it could be tied into this rumor. Either way, a shoddy upconversion/cleanup job would be pointless here. Mill Creek is going to be making a decision soon. Last edited by Lionel Horsepackage; 04-11-2016 at 08:08 PM. |

This has always been one of my favorite shows and I'd love to have it on blu. I last watched the series again about eight years ago and it'd be nice to revisit in hi-def. Hopefully it both does get released and is from a good source.
