Default decoding

if a blu ray player can decode an audio format (ex dolby true hd) and the reciever cannot will i be able to play that format? or vice vers if the player cannot decode it (the cheapest sony player) but my reciever can will i be able to play it?

First case: If the receiver can handle HDMI audio and the player can output it, yes. Or, if the receiver can handle a 5.1/7.1 analogue input and the player can output it, also yes.

Second case:

If the player can bitstream the audio (ie, it has the correct firmware or isn't a PS3), yes.

Generally no. Think of compressed audio like a ZIP file - there's only one correct way to decode it, and you either use that method or you get a mangled output.

Things get more complicated when you discuss dialogue normalisation on Dolby soundtracks or have a PS3, and you also can't mix audio tracks together as you can with LPCM, but overall I would say that a volume-matched comparison of PCM and bitstreaming will sound identical.

Also, if you're worried about this sort of thing but are using a $250 receiver and $300 worth of speakers, you're focusing in the wrong areas.
