Default How much space needed for PS3 backup?

so, finally planning on backing up my ps3.

i can do it two ways...
1. i have an old external hard drive, 120g hard drive...
2. i can purchase a CF card with 16G for it.

for the external, i noticed, it wont recognize it, due to it being NTFS.
questions are...
1. what utility MAXIMIZES the use of the hard drive, without incurring extra cost?
2. whats so bad about using xp's format utility?
3. is it easy?
4. whats the ETA if ever i plan to backup my ps3?

for the second part, the CF option,

1. will it fit?
2. i think its a great option simply because i dont have to keep it hanging around my ps3 like the external hard drive.

just rethinking my current gameplan.

thank you for your input!

the amount of space depends on whats on your drive. i use my old 60gig drive to back up my 160gig internal ps3 drive. its not full but i had to delete 12 gigs so that it would fit on the external 60gig. i had to delete some trailers, demos.
using windows to format a drive to fat32 only lets you format 32 gigs (i think) at a time. thats why i used swissknife to format the entire drive. its freeware.

it took the ps3 an hour and a half to back up the entire 60 gigs (or close to it) but took my computer only 20 minutes to copy it.
the larger the drive the larger the back up drive needs to be. i wish sony would impliment some sort of checklist for backing up data, like only backing up game saves and no pictures, etc.

Yes, a backup checklist would be a real good function. I don't have an external hdd, let alone giant one just to fit everything that is on my ps3. I also wish Sony could come up with a way to directly send a backup image over wifi to a local computer. Why go through all the trouble to implement wifi, and only allow its use for internet access? Isn't the bigger picture of a "wireless home" being ignored, here?
