He has double my collection, but with the amount of films I own on DVD, Blu, VHS, LaserDisc plus digital/streaming...at $20 a title (with 6000+ titles) I'm around $120,000 in media cost. I'm sure it's less than that with sells and what not...but yeah. I have a problem. I've been collecting over 20+ years so I guess it's not that terrible.

Unlike that guy, I've actually watched most of my collection.

Rather than donating this money that's burning a hole in my pocket, I'm going to collect movies and never watch them.

So by your logic, instead of spending the money I EARN on stuff I WANT, I should give it to a charity that will only use a small fraction of it for their cause?

No thanks. What I spend is up to me, not you.

If he took all of them to his local used store he would get $20 in cash or $35 in store credit.

Why are you getting so defensive? I'm making a general assessment.

I'm not telling anyone how to spend their money, but if you're essentially going to waste it "just 'cause," why not do something good with it instead?

Overreact much?

Someone's got a lot of unopened movies...

Oh, come on. You're clearly judging how this guy is spending his money. Which is fine. That's a very popular sport in these parts.

But if you're going to second-guess how somebody else spends his own money at least own it.

So, people's disposable income should pay someone else's salary?

Exactly. We work for our money, who cares how we spend it? It's not their business to put justifications on what we spend our money on. By that logic, why even work to earn it if people will frown upon someone using it for luxury items?

Lol. I think he was commenting that dude has 15,000 movies, of which he's watched 200. Does that strike you as a big film fan like everyone in this thread? It's eccentric at best.

What you're saying does have some merit.

That being said, having a movie collection of 15,000 and admitting that you've only watched about 200 of them just reeks of rich-man douchiness. Like having a giant book collection full of books you've never read, it's about vanity more than anything else.

That's why he's on camera talking about it.

...it screams "Look at me world!...I'm RICH!!!!"

I think the point is that it's his right to buy what he wants. He shouldn't be PC-browbeat into donating to charity because he only watches a handful of what he buys.

My dad doesn't ride motorcycles anymore but still thinks they are cool and likes the models and has bike parts in his game room and he has thought about buying a display bike just to have in there. He should just donate the money for that to charity since he'll never ride it?

If he is married his wife would probably have 30,000 pairs of shoes.*

No, your dad sounds cool. He was a passionate rider, knows his stuff and wants to fly the flag of his enthusiasm and his past. I get that.

I think this guy is clown shoes and is doing something dumb. Opinions.

Like I said, he's clearly purchasing "just 'cause." Nothing about him strikes me as this enormous film fan who lives and breathes cinema. Hence why I suggested that if he is so anxious to spend his money, why not doing something good with it instead? Ultimately, to each his own.

If everyone wants to get upset over the opinion that I am entitled to, so be it.

Maybe. He could have been just cheeky with the 200 watches tho. He did seem to be well aware of Indian and 3D Cinema, so he isn't completely oblivious. He also seemed totally into LaserDiscs, soooooo maybe he doesn't watch them like he used to be he still enjoys cinema. Who knows. It shouldn't matter tho. He can buy whatever he wants.
