I have the Yamaha YST-SW315 Sub. It has a 10" cone on the bottom that faces toward the floor. It has about I'd say 4" hole on the side also. I guess this is what you would call a down firing sub?
Can anyone suggest how I should point that 4" hole port for best setup. ![]() Thanks |

Should the port point to the center of the main seats or at the wall?

The port is just that "a port" it's just used to allow air flow (since the movement of the sub causes it) It makes no difference which direction it is pointed, because sound isn't coming out of it...... so since I'm assuming the Port is on the same side of the speaker as the amp etc... I'd point it towards the wall shearly for cosmetic reasons...... but it's really up to you, because it really doesn't matter.

I think this sub might be different. Here is what the manual states for the Yamaha YST-SW315: "Active servo processing speakers reproduce the bass frequencies through an air woofer, which is a port or opening in the speaker's cabinet. This opening is used instead of, and preforms the functions of, a woofer in a conventionally designed speaker system. Thus, signals of low amplitude within the cabinet can, according to the Helmholtz resonance theory, be outputted from this opening as waves of great amplitude." Does this make any sense? Is this a newer technology in the sub woofer market? |

forgot to answer your questions.
a. they are downfiring subwoofers b. the 'hole' no matter what marketing they say, basically moves air efficiently out of the sub, to create a non directional sound to create bass. 1. get a spl meter. dont want to spend 50 clams to get the best out of your room? go to number 2. 2. research. see https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=35062 for starters see http://www.dolby.com/consumer/home_e...oomlayout.html 3. depends on taste, more boomy? stick it closer to the corner, closer to the walls more 'finesse'? stick it farther away from the corner, and around 4 inches away from the wall. betteR? - get some bass traps, work on acoustics. 4. as mentioned earlier, you can get any sub to perform, but to get quality sound out of em requires a little more patience, and some very good acoustic treatments. no two rooms sound alike, thus the need to 'enhance' or 'dampen' the sound of your speakers. |

This sub I would probably put it in a corner to start... |
