Default Complete audio noob needs help.

Hey guys,

My girlfriend just purchased me a Yamaha HTR 6030 for my birthday. I am just getting into the home theatre world and have a questions:

Without HDMI on the receiver, what do I hook it up to my PS3 with and I hope to God I am able to get HD sound for games and Blu Rays?

Optical's your only way to go, which unfortunately means no lossless except for stereo PCM.

Thanks Bstecke, I guess i'll go buy an optical. Alright. This is from the sticky:

With this selected you will only be able to achieve the traditional "lossy" core tracks from Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 or 2.0 PCM (stereo). If your disc does not list Dolby Digital or DTS alone, have no fear, these tracks are embedded in their lossless counterparts. Choose TrueHD or DTSHD-MA and you will get the core track as long as the settings are as described above.

What is the traditional "lossy" core tracks from DDigital 5.1 and DTS 5.1?

AKA What does Lossless mean? Even simpler, does it mean that I can't receive HD sound? Gosh this audio business makes me cringe.

Lossless is a format in which no data is lost from the conversion from the master to the disc. On Blu-ray, lossless is TrueHD, DTS HDMA/HDHR, and then there's uncompressed PCM.

What happens is, a TrueHD track or a DTS MA/HR track will have a core Dolby Digital or DTS track so that you will still get basically the same quality you would get from a DVD. DTS is higher @ 1.5mbps compared to the typical 755 kbps.

But yeah . . . no HD sound. Sorry

It was a gift that I appreciate greatly. Even low-end Onkyo's are too much for us (college) and this one was a deal from a friend at $150.

from time to time you can find refurbished 605s for $300 shipped... i understand your situation... but as of right now... HD audio is still in early-adoption...so there is a price premium. your only other option is aquiring one of the current blu-ray players that has 5.1 rca-outputs... but since you have a ps3 that kinda defeats the purpose... please i could never recommend any of these players as they have loading and disc compatibility issues.

Well I can certainly live with regular 5.1 until I can afford some home theatre upgrades. So when I run off to buy a cable do I need a converter/adaptor or does this optical cable have an HDMI style end to go from the PS3? You'll have to excuse how unknowledable I am about this stuff.

It's just an optical cable.

Monoprice.

Blue Jeans.

Any of the ones from Monoprice will work, as will the one Blue Jeans sells. Blue Jeans lets you order by the foot, in case you need like 7 ft and don't want to bother with 12 ft. I buy all my stuff from Blue Jeans, but Monoprice has a very good reputation as well.

Ok, so here is what you have to do.

#1. Use an optical cable for sound (I'm sure you've figured that out already with the above posts)
#2. SET THE PS3 AUDIO SETTINGS TO "BITSTREAM" THE AUDIO!!! Selecting LPCM, although it will appear to sound better, will only get you 2 channel stereo sound and the sound in the rear speakers will a very bad faked single audio stream... the same sound in both rear speakers... a.k.a. NOT DIRECTIONAL SURROUND.

Essentially, you will only be able to get the exact same audio out of Blu-ray playback that you get out of regular DVD. No HD Audio! Sorry.

Optical is audio only..
You will still need to connect to the Tv via the HDMI (if the Tv has it)
or the component cable for PS3 (Red/Blue/Green...NOT Red/White/Yellow)
Be sure to set the PS3 to use the Optical out or you will not get sound from the receiver.
Hope that helps
Mike

Yeah my TV has HDMI :P See how little I know about audio...disgusting. So... I went through the works of taking my little straw broom looking speaker wires, twisted em, and snapping them into the positive and negative holes and set em all up. I will go buy optical for the sound and some new component cables for my cable box to get into the receiver... when I get this sucker all fired up I assume I need to program it with my remote?

I'll keep you guys updated with my dumb ass comments.

Another question... I have a pair of HUGE old stereo speakers that hook up the same way. What would happen for shits and giggles if I took the front 2 tiny speakers out and put them in it's place? Does this work? Would there be a point?

Not sure what the "huge" speakers are.... depends..... but You'd want a center channel to match them, otherwise I don't think you'd be too impressed with the sound, although when listening to 2-channel it may be a big improvement (depending again, on what these "huge" speakers are)

Ok more ridiculous problems that are probably easy to solve.

I can't figure out how to actually... get sound? I did the easy setup and set it to 5.1, and the test got sound on every speaker. This manual is complete garbage to me and I can't understand how to set up the PS3 and cable box to it? Hardware wise im fine and they are both hooked up... but what do I need to do menu wise to get some playback on em? I don't even know what it's supposed to be on for the PS3... V-AUX? DVD? The manual is very, very little help by the way.
