Default What are the benefits of....?

Maybe I am just late in upgrading my sound system but so far I have been happy with my 5.1 system. I set my default setting on my bluray to Dolby Digital 5.1, but is PCM 5.1 better? What is the difference?

I have a Yamaha Home Theater in a Box system with a powered sub. I have a fiber optic cable directly from my Bluray player into the receiver.

I searched this and got absolutely nothing, so please no more "learn how to search".

If your AVR is limited to optical tos link, the best is DD5.1 and DTS 5.1. The optical link is limited to two channels when uncompressed PCM is used. An upgrade will surely be beneficial however, 5.1 DD is not bad either.

Oh, that makes sense! I was wondering why it kept going to stereo when PCM was my default.
