Smile Use your PS Eye on a Mac

I found a webcam driver that lets you use the PS Eye as a webcam for OS X. It works so much better than the crappy iSight.

Cool, nice find. It was only a matter of time.

Nice find. Especially since Apple has not made it a priority to release any new webcams since they've discontinued the iSight a while ago and will only include built-in (crappy) webcams on a select number of their new Macs. With video messaging being so prevalent on the PC's nowadays, it just irks me that Apple has put this technology in the background despite all their claims for the digital lifestyle to be so awesome on the Macs. And no fanboyism here, I own a Mac G4 Powerbook so there's some justified resentment

I'll get a PSEye if there's a WinXP driver that I can use it with.

Actually, the built-in (crappy) webcams are included on all new Macs, aside from the Mac Mini and Mac Pro which don't have displays, obviously. And their video messaging software is pretty damn sweet if you ask me. I wouldn't exactly say they are putting the technology in the background since every new Mac that ships with a display comes with the ability to start a full-fledged video conference right out of the box.

The built-in webcams aren't that great of quality, but the iSight still remains one of the best webcams ever -- even by today's standards, IMO.

I agree. I own an external iSight, it's firewire-based and is one of the best webcams.

The iSight isn't "crappy", but it's not great. It should be at least 2 megapixels.

Sorry, guess I didn't highlight the "all new Macs" aspect of it too well. I meant to say that Apple wasn't providing the best of webcam support or devices for those of us that had the earlier Macs that did not ship with built-in webcams. I'm not about to shell out another couple of $$ for a new Mac just because my current one doesn't have a webcam. I love my Mac but it just seems that Apple seems to thrive on planned obsolescence with every yearly product that they come up with beyond the industry norm.

Sorry, not the best choice of words but from what I read regularly in the Mac forums that's the more polite form I've seen

That, and I was just following your lead ;-)

I would like to share my agreement with you, but since Apple themselves do not have the iSight anywhere on their online store would you able to direct me to a site that does sell it?

Just a note that as of the latest version of the Macam driver (0.9.1) the PS3 Eye model (SLEH 00201) will work with a Mac, but the driver does not seem to work with the PS3 Eye manufactured under the Namtai label. Hopefully the driver will be updated to include that specific model soon since the PS2 USB EyeToy made by Namtai seems to work just fine
