You sure can. mix-n-match is perfectly fine for surround speakers, you just want to make sure that your fronts and center are of the same manufacturer and line so they have the same tonality.

Yeah, I'm running a set of Sony 3 way speakers for my front left and right. I have a pretty nice 3 way center, and matching surrounds that work fine. The Sony 3 way bookshelf speakers are huge, even though they say that the speakers are small on their website. Each one weighs 14 lbs. That's insane. But it has an 8" woofer, a 3.5" mid, and a 1" tweeter. Very nice. The sound is incredible for both music and movies. I like them.

I'm using these as rear surrounds....... (obviously a "bookshelf" but quite large as far as bookshelf speakers go)
http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/displa...fid=1096&sc=ht Unfortunately, Had I known I was going to want to upgrade so quickly, I may have gone in another direction for surrounds, because the stands were a little pricey, but I'm happy with these for surrounds, so it's all good. |

I used a pair of Energy bookshelves as my surrounds, but I did not get that "Wall of Sound" from the back due to their limited direction. I changed over to the proper Energy surrounds and wow what a difference, 2 tweeters and 1 woofer each all properly directed to enhance the "wall of sound" effect.

I use triangular shaped surrounds and each face of these has a tweeter and a mid/woofer mounted. So each speaker has 4 drivers. I feel this gives me a satisfactory sound than a book-shelf. I feel book-shelf as too directional. Others might feel differently.
However, I expect that the book-shelf speakers can be placed in a way that they would be less directional. |

I have a pair of these on my "to buy" list. The BP 1.2x- my buddy has them and they sound fantastic. You can find them cheaper than what their site says
