Criterion Beyond the Hills (2012)

Quote:
With this arresting drama based on notorious real-life events, Cristian Mungiu mounts a complex inquiry into faith, fanaticism, and indifference. At a desolate Romanian monastery, a young novice nun, Voichiţa (Cosmina Stratan), reunites with her former companion Alina (Cristina Flutur), who plans to take her to Germany. But Voichiţa proves unwilling to abandon her calling, and Alina becomes increasingly desperate to reclaim her devotion, putting the outsider at odds with the monastery’s ascetic priest—and precipitating a painfully misguided, brutal attempt to save her soul. A naturalistic tragedy with the dark force of a folktale, anchored by the fraught dynamic between cinema newcomers Flutur and Stratan (who shared the best actress prize at Cannes), Beyond the Hills bears powerful witness to individuals at cross-purposes and institutions ill-equipped to help those most in need.

My ex will be happy to hear about this. He's a huge "Beyond the Hills" fan and I always told him Criterion would inevitably release it.

What happened to 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days? Did Criterion loose the rights to it?

They're probably holding off, as it appears to be the most popular of Mungiu's films.

Hopefully it'll be released in the next few years, especially as they're releasing Mungiu's most subpar film (this one) on Criterion.

I'm really looking forward to this, and to Graduation for that matter. I saw 4 Months and was blown away. So I have no problem blind-buying both of these come May. They each look pretty intense.

Def. worth the multiple years I've been waiting. I can't figure out why this one took so long to drop.

Saw it at TIFF 2012, and then again at a press screening when I interned at Indiewire. Got to do an interview with the two actresses as well! Maybe the best of the small handful of bylines I have.

Hopefully 4 MONTHS drops sooner than later. When I was scrolling through the list and saw this and GRADUATION, I held my breath hoping all three would show up the same month, but alas. . .

Is this supposed to be taking place in present time or during the war?

Great film. Better than 4 Months, which I thought was overrated.

I agree it's the better film but 4 Months is still pretty excellent. Also, I recommend Graduation although it is, relatively speaking, the least of the three. Also out on Criterion.

I have both of those as well. Going to watch Graduation and rewatch 4 Months.

Out of the three Mungiu films Criterion has released I don't think I can pick which one I like best, they're all near masterpieces of cinema for me.
