Default Sony sells 9.24 million PS3s in 2007; reveals forecast for '08

Thats alot of ps3's, this year its going to be 10 million easily.
Quote:
Sony Corporation has announced that it sold approximately 9.24 million PlayStation 3 consoles in the financial year ended March 31, further adding that it plans to sell 10 million during the upcoming 2008 business year.

This brings the total number of PS3s sold globally since launch to 12.85 million, with the Xbox 360 currently at 19 million and the Wii at 24.45 million.

The company also revealed that it sold a total of 15 million PlayStation Portable units, although it neglected to reveal its current sales forecast for the handheld device.

Elsewhere, the platform holder is also expected to sell 17 million liquid crystal TVs for the fiscal year ending March 2009, up from the previous year ended March 31 2008, where the firm sold 10.6 million.

Mizuho Securities analyst, Koichi Hariya, commented: “The forecast for 450 billion yen in operating profit this financial year looks solid, given that there’s been speculation the yen’s rise and slower U.S. growth could have a negative impact.”

“The results could lead to bullish sentiment on Sony shares."
so by the end of 2008 they should be at 20 million sold world wide.

The second time I've seen a reference to this today. There was an uproar on the BlenderNation boards about M$ sticking their nose into development, and it only took about3 posts for someone to post this link. I can't stop watching it, its so hysterical.

You kinda feel sorry for him, but not really.

PS3 should do pretty good this year with MGS4 coming out. I dont know why people call the Wii "next gen". The graphics are strictly last gen, and yeah motion control is cool for 5 mins, but they had a power glove on the NES too.

If you look at it in terms of how many working, still-operable units are out there for each, the PS3 is quite possibly one big title (say, MGS4) away from surpassing the 360's userbase.

MGS4 isn't going to catch up 6∼7M console sales alone. But it's a very good start.

edit: 'active' consoles eh. Well there's no way of telling about that.

That much is true, not 6-7. I was however, theorizing the true difference is closer to 2-3. Posted number is 19M, and based on news items about how many have gone Red Ring, I estimate that 4M of them don't work and are thus being double-counted.

As a math major and student-actuary, it's in my nature to estimate/theorize.

9.24 in 2007 and 10 in 2008?

Heads up guys, Sony is not telling you the truth here...

2007 was a horrible year for PS3. EVERYONE knows it. Sony knows they will top 10 mill worldwide EASY in 2008. They give that number because stockholders like it. With the games that are coming by Sony's next fiscal year, Sony will have sold well over their 2007 numbers, not just 760,000 more. You kidding me?

What is REALLY interesting is 2007 was so bad, everyone called the PS3 a failure. Now *they* are saying it is going to blow up this summer. If you look at the numbers, PS3 did better than 360 and as well as the PS2 in its first full year.

How is that failing?

I would guess between 12-17 million units in 2008.

They definitely will sell more than 10 million this year, there keeping the numbers low just in case. or when they do sell more than that they can say we did better than expected, its all part of the plan

They are basically saying 8% growth versus prior year and that figure is probably hedged for the economic slowdown. It's reasonable and any CFO who would promise more in this economic environment is stupid.

It seems like you are arguing with yourself between the 2 bolded segments. Was it a failure or not?
