Default White Balance . . . questions????

I notice a lot of isf calibrations put the blues in dark and light scenes way down as well as cranking reds. i set mine to even 0's across the board and seem to get the best color balance and most vivid picture this way. can someone explain to me in depth "white balance" settings and also explain why they prefer a tweaked version as opposed to straight 0's!!! thanks for your time as always.

Oh, i own a Sony KDL 52W3000.
